From 1988 to 2007 he served as Vice provost education provost of the California Institute of Technology Caltech , where he is also a professor of physics and applied physics , as well as since 1995 the Frank J. Gilloon Distinguished Teaching and Service Professor. Life and work Goodstein was educated at Brooklyn College Bachelor of Science BS , 1960 and at the University of Washington Doctor of Philosophy Ph.D. , 1965 . He has written several books, including States of Matter 1975 reprinted in a Dover paperback edition and Feynman s Lost Lecture 1996 . In the 1980s he was the director and host of The Mechanical Universe , an educational television series on physics that has been adapted for high school use and translated into many other languages. The series has been broadcast on hundreds of public broadcasting stations and has garnered more than a dozen prestigious awards, including the 1987 Japan Prize for television.     Reuben Louis Goodstein 15 December 1912 in London 8 March 1985 in Leicester was an England English mathematician with a strong interest in the philosophy and teaching of mathematics . As a boy, he attended St Paul s School London St Paul s School in London. He received his Master s degree from the University of Cambridge . After this, he worked at the University of Reading but ultimately spent most of his academic career in the University of Leicester . He earned his Doctor of Philosophy PhD from the University of London in 1946 while still working in Reading. Goodstein also studied under Wittgenstein and John Edensor Littlewood John Littlewood . He published many works on finitism and the reconstruction of analysis from a finitistic viewpoint, for example Constructive Formalism. Essays on the foundations of mathematics. Goodstein s theorem was among the earliest examples of theorems found to be unprovable in Peano arithmetic but provable in stronger Formal system logical systems such as second order arithmetic . He also introduced a variant of the Ackermann function that is now known as the hyperoperation hyperoperation sequence , together with the naming convention now used for these operations tetration , pentation , etc. .
