Though the railway had amalgamated with the North Eastern Railway UK North Eastern Railway NER in 1863, it continued to build its own designs for a number of years. In 1877 the first North Eastern designs appeared. In 1914 a class of NER Bo Bo electric locomotives were built at the works to run between Shildon and Newport. Ten of these 1500 volt direct current locomotives were completed. Sir Vincent Raven designed the NER Class T2 0 8 0 freight locomotive in 1913, and by 1921 the works had built 120 of the engines, which were later designated Q6 by the LNER. The heavier and more powerful Raven NER Class T3 0 8 0 LNER Q7 followed in 1919, 15 engines being completed by 1924. The original structure was a built for the nineteenth century Darlington Winery in 1890 for Alfred Waylen and Josceline Amherst. It is now called Darlington Hall, and a part is home to the Darlington Club. The building is registered with the Western Australian Heritage Council. The original structure is known as the lesser hall, while the more recent larger section on the west side is the main hall. A large number of local groups and people have used the space for meetings and private events. William Darlington cousin of Edward Darlington and Isaac Darlington , second cousin of Smedley Darlington was born in Birmingham, Chester County, Pennsylvania . He attended Birmingham Friends Meetinghouse Friends School at Birmingham and spent his youth on a farm. He became a botanist at an early age, studied medicine, and graduated from the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia in 1804. He went to the East Indies as ship s surgeon in 1806. He returned to West Chester in 1807 and was a practicing physician there for a number of years. He raised a company of volunteers at the beginning of the War of 1812 and was major of a volunteer regiment. Earl of Darlington is a title that has been created twice, each time in the Peerage of Great Britain . The first time was in 1722 for the Sophia von Kielmansegg, Countess of Leinster and Darlington Baroness von Kielmansegg , half sister sup 1 sup of George I of Great Britain King George I . She was created Baroness Brentford at the same time. This creation was for life only, and so the titles expired on her death in 1730. Smedley Darlington December 24, 1827 &ndash June 24, 1899 was a Republican Party United States Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania . File Smedley Darlington House.JPG thumb upright 1.3 Smedley Darlington s house in West Chester Biography Smedley Darlington second cousin of Congressmen Edward Darlington , Isaac Darlington , and William Darlington was born in Pocopson Township, Pennsylvania . He attended the common schools and the Friends Central School in Philadelphia . He taught at Friends Central School for several years, and while teaching he made stenographic reports of sermons, lectures, and speeches for the morning dailies of Philadelphia. He established a school in Ercildoun, Pennsylvania , in 1851 which he operated for twelve years. He enlisted in the Civil War as a private and was subsequently promoted to the rank of captain in Beaumont s independent company of cavalry, Pennsylvania Volunteer Emergency Militia. He was discharged with the company September 24, 1862. He moved to West Chester, Pennsylvania , in 1864. He conducted an extensive banking and brokerage business. He was a delegate to the Liberal Republican Party United States Liberal Republican National Convention in 1872 and the 1896 Republican National Convention . Darlington was elected as a Republican to the 50th United States Congress Fiftieth and 51st United States Congress Fifty first Congresses. He was not a candidate for renomination in 1890. He resumed the brokerage business and banking. He died in West Chester in 1899. Interment in Oakland Cemetery near West Chester. He was the grandfather of Smedley Butler Smedley Darlington Butler .
