It is his fifth and final novel, published in 1964 in literature 1964 , two years before his death. It features a mad scientist, De Selby , who tries to destroy the world by removing all the oxygen from the air. He has also many strange inventions. He exploits the theory of relativity and invents a kind of time traveling machine, which he uses to age his whiskey creating brews that have been aged for many decades in just a few hours. Augustine of Hippo Saint Augustine and James Joyce both have speaking parts in the novel. James Joyce , after forging his own obituary to escape being drafted to fight in the Second World War, was serving pints in a small pub. Augustine of Hippo Saint Augustine , on the other hand, appeared in a magical underwater cave and held a conversation with De Selby . The mad scientist De Selby leads the two main characters, Hackett and Mick, to the cave, to witness this conversation. Many prominent elements of the book, particularly De Selby himself, the eccentric policemen, and the atomic theory of the bicycle, were taken from O Brien s much earlier novel The Third Policeman , because he had not been able to find a publisher for it. The latter novel was published posthumously. unreferenced date August 2009 The archive bit is a file attribute used by Microsoft operating systems and by OS 2. Typically its state indicates whether or not the file has been backed up. When a file is created or modified, the archive bit is set, and when the file has been backed up, the archive bit is cleared. It is by use of the archive bit that incremental backups are implemented. Backup software also provides the option to do a full backup while clearing archive bits that is, to back up all files irrespective of the archive bit, but to clear the archive bit of all files in the backup for the future. This allows for the creation of an initial full backup that will be supplemented by incremental backups in the future. The operating system never clears the archive bit on its own, unless explicitly told to do so by the user. In MS DOS as well as nearly all versions of Microsoft Windows Windows , the archive bit can be seen or changed with the attrib command line utility, or by viewing the properties of a given file with the Windows shell . The archive bit can also be seen or changed with the http msdn.microsoft.com en us library aa364944 28v VS.85 29.aspx GetFileAttributes , http msdn.microsoft.com en us library aa364946 28v VS.85 29.aspx GetFileAttributesEx and http msdn.microsoft.com en us library aa365535 28v VS.85 29.aspx SetFileAttributes Windows APIs. When a file with a clear archive bit is moved from one place on a file system to another, the archive bit reverts to being set . Typically, on a computer system that has never been backed up in a manner that clears archive bits, all files on that computer will have their archive bits set , as there are few applications that make use of archive bits without the user s request. As the archive bit is a file attribute and not part of the file itself, the contents of the file are unrelated to the status of the archive bit and remain unchanged even if the setting of the archive bit is changed. Issues Relying on the archive ... more details

X No Archive , also known colloquially as xna , is a newsgroup message header field used to prevent a Usenet message from being Usenet Archives archived in various News server servers . Origin The need for X No Archive began when DejaNews debuted in 1995. DejaNews was the first large scale commercial attempt to archive the Usenet news feed, and several newsgroup participants were concerned about privacy rights and about the possibility that their messages could be re posted through DejaNews in the future. DejaNews addressed these concerns by announcing that it would not archive Usenet messages containing the X No Archive header field. How it works X No Archive was designed to follow the standard ... by news servers and newsreaders. The phrase No Archive was coined as a way to state Do not archive this message, and the X prefix was added to complete the term X No Archive. The proper field to prevent a message from being archived is X No Archive Yes abbreviated as XNAY . Some software systems also do not archive if the first line in the body of the message contains this text. This is useful for those users who cannot change the header of messages they send out. If the X No Archive field is set to No , or the field is absent, a Usenet archive will not recognize a prohibition on archiving the message ... the X No Archive directive. Beginning in 2005, Google s newsgroup service Google Groups changed its handling of X No Archive, allowing messages with the field to be archived and made available for view for six days, after which the message is made unavailable in the archive.
