The Advanced Authoring Format AAF is a professional file interchange format designed for the video post production and authoring environment. The AAF was created by the Advanced Media Workflow Association AMWA . The AMWA develops specifications and technologies to facilitate the deployment and operation of efficient media workflows. The AMWA works closely with standards bodies like the SMPTE. Technical work of the association is through projects that strive for compatibility between AAF Advanced Authoring Format , BXF, MXF Material Exchange Format and XML. The current projects fall into three categories data models, interface specifications, and application specifications. AAF was created to help address the problem of multi vendor, cross platform interoperability for computer based digital video production. There are two kinds of data that can be interchanged using AAF Audio, video, still image, graphics, text, animation, music, and other forms of multimedia data. In AAF these kinds of data are called essence data, because they are the essential data within a multimedia program that can be perceived directly by the audience Data that provides information on how to combine or modify individual sections of essence data or that provides supplementary information about essence data. In AAF these kinds of data are called metadata, which is defined as data about other data. The metadata in an AAF file can provide the information needed to combine and modify the sections of essence data in the AAF file to produce a complete multimedia program. Unreferenced date October 2006 Orphan date November 2009 The Faculty Authoring Development Program FAD and Courseware Authoring Tools Project CAT were courseware development initiatives at Stanford University during the years 1984 1990s. Several dozen teaching applications were created including tutorials in economics, drama simulations, thermodynamics lessons, and historical and anthropological role playing games. Courseware Authoring Tools Project In 1984 FAD began by asking professors to propose projects for teaching with microcomputers. It then awarded programming support for six months or a year to several faculty. In 1987 in a new project, the Courseware Authoring Tools Project, end user authoring systems for creating teaching applications were developed. Faculty used these authoring tools to create their own applications with a reduced level of support. A multimedia lab was also started at this time to author videodisc based applications. The effort was started by Michael Carter, director of Stanford s Instruction and Research Information Systems group, and managed by Barbara Jasinski. Applications were distributed on floppy discs with assistance from the Apple University Consortium through Kinko s copy centers. Refimprove date March 2008 Optical disc authoring Image DVD RW crop.JPG thumb DVD RW discs on a spindle A DVD RW disc is a rewritable optical disc with equal computer storage storage capacity to a DVD R , typically 4.7 gigabyte GB . The format was developed by Pioneer company Pioneer in November 1999 and has been approved by the DVD Forum . The smaller Mini DVD RW holds 1.46 GB, with a diameter of 8  cm. The primary advantage of DVD RW over DVD R is the ability to erase and rewrite to a DVD RW disc. According to Pioneer, DVD RW discs may be written to about 1,000 times before needing replacement. DVD RW discs are commonly used to store data in a non volatile format, such as when creating backups or collections of files. They are also increasingly used for home DVD video recorder s. One benefit to using a rewritable disc is if there are writing errors when recording data, the disc is not ruined and can still store data by erasing the faulty data.
