Refimprove date March 2008 Optical disc authoring Image DVDRW crop.JPG thumb DVDRW discs on a spindle A DVDRW disc is a rewritable optical disc with equal computer storage storage capacity to a DVD R , typically 4.7 gigabyte GB . The format was developed by Pioneer company Pioneer in November 1999 and has been approved by the DVD Forum . The smaller Mini DVDRW holds 1.46 GB, with a diameter of 8  cm. The primary advantage of DVDRW over DVD R is the ability to erase and rewrite to a DVDRW disc. According to Pioneer, DVDRW discs may be written to about 1,000 times before needing replacement. DVDRW discs are commonly used to store data in a non volatile format, such as when creating backups or collections of files. They are also increasingly used for home DVD video recorder s. One benefit to using a rewritable disc is if there are writing errors when recording data, the disc is not ruined and can still store data by erasing the faulty data. One competing rewritable format is DVDRW . Hybrid drives that can handle both, often labeled DVDRW , are very popular due to the lack of a single standard for recordable DVDs. The book type is a field of four bits at the start of every DVD in the physical format information section of the control data block that indicates what the physical format of the disc is. Many devices will use this Book Type Field to determine how the disc should be treated. One common cause of compatibility problems is the failure of a device to recognize the book type of the disc that has been loaded, most likely as a result of the device being manufactured before that particular book type has been defined. E.g., most DVD playback devices made before mid 2004 will not recognize the relatively new DVD R DL Book Type . For DVD R, DVDRW, and DVD R DL discs, it is possible to change the Book Type field value to the value for DVD ROM or in some rare and unorthodox cases, even the value for DVD R in order to fool older devices that do not recognize newer Book Type Field values this process is known as bitsetting . VR mode or Video Recording mode is a feature on stand alone consumer and computer DVD recorders that allows video recording and editing on a DVD rewritable disc. In VR mode, users can create and rename titles for the scenes. Also, if a scene is deleted, the space allocated by it will be utilized later without the need of reformatting a disc. If the user would like to record on the same disc again at a later time, in VR mode, users may eject the disc and it will not be finalized by the recorder until it is manually initiated. For the sake of comparison, any DVD disc recorded in VR s competitor V mode or Video mode will be automatically finalized before it is ejected by the recorder. Disc finalization is still required if the disc formatted for VR mode will be played in another DVD player. Currently, users can only record in VR mode with the use of DVDRW , DVD RAM and DVDRW discs, updated in 2000 to accommodate DVD R General DVD players marked RW compatible and DVD Multi can play DVD VR recorded discs and on some recorders, also on hard disk drives. Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 Orphan date December 2009 DVD s and compact disc CDs have their data encoded on a single spiral, or a groove , which covers the surface of the disc. In case the optical medium is recordable, this spiral contains a slight sine wave sinusoidal deviation from a perfect spiral . The period of this sine curve corresponds to the wobble frequency . First of all, it is used as synchronization source to achieve constant linear velocity while writing a disc. In addition, the slight wobble frequency modulation is used to encode some information, such as Absolute Time in Pregroove ATIP on CD R and CD RW discs.
