  1. Fax modem

Unreferenced date August 2008 Image PCI V.92 Fax Modem Card Digon3.jpg thumb right A V.92 fax modem card A fax modem enables a computer to transmit and receive documents as fax es. A fax modem is like a data modem but is designed to transmit and receive documents to and from a fax machine or another fax modem. Some, but not all, fax modems do double duty as data modems. As with other modem s, fax modems can be internal or external. Internal fax modems are often called fax boards. History In the early 90 s small business PCs commonly had a PC based fax modem card and fax software typically WinFax Pro . Now largely replaced by E mail, PC based faxing with a fax modem is more and more a rarity. Where faxing from a PC is required there are a number of Internet fax Internet based faxing alternatives. So, while it s still common to see businesses with a one or more traditional fax machines churning out pages, they are often surrounded by a forest of PCs processing even more E mail. PC faxing Computer users may set up a PC fax modem with card, telephone line access and software, or use a service similar to printing from a PC or sending an E mail message. Fax integration is available in unified communications e.g. E mail, Voice Mail and Fax managed together , in a number of Business telephone system Hosted PBX systems Hosted PBX products where standard features allow users to send a fax by using the fax phone number as the address of a E mail message, and receive incoming faxes via E mail with the Fax content presented as a PDF attachment. The use of fax modem cards after the 1990s became a last resort, as compared to a high speed Internet connection. Few users saw a reason for the effort of making this old technology approach work. 1. Teleplay Modem

Image Teleplay large.jpg thumb 200px right The Teleplay Modem attached to a NES and a Sega Genesis. The Teleplay Modem was a modem for the Nintendo Entertainment System created by Keith Rupp and Nolan Bushnell , designed to provide online play between NES users, while also possessing compatibility with the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo Entertainment System Super Nintendo . The first prototype, called the Ayota Modem , had a maximum speed of only 300 bit s, too slow to render normal NES quality graphics. It was unveiled at the 1992 consumer electronics show in Las Vegas, where it received a fairly good reception. Bushnell later dropped out of the project, and Keith Rupp founded the company Baton Technologies . He continued to develop the modem, changing its name to the Teleplay Modem, increasing the speed to 2400 bit s, and also conceiving the idea of Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo system compatibility. The modem would also allow cross platform play between Nintendo and Sega with properly coded games. Three games were developed internally Battle Storm, Terran Wars, and Sea Battle but never released. Both Nintendo and Sega refused to license the Teleplay Modem or the games developed for it. Sega instead licensed AT&T to develop a modem the Edge 16 , but no hardware was ever sold at retail. The venture capitalists behind Baton Technologies feared competing against AT&T and attempting to sell hardware games without the all important licensing, so Baton was unable to fulfill its first 300,000 order, and quickly folded thereafter in the summer of 1993. Later Catapult Entertainment developed the 2400 baud XBand modem, similar to the Teleplay Modem in many respects. Although well funded by Old Viacom Viacom , Catapult failed to receive sufficient developer and gamer backing, folding in early 1997.
