    Unreferenced date February 2007 About the H hour of Operation Overlord the general military designation H hour H hour was the name given to the airborne assault in the Operation Overlord Battle of Normandy . It included the American 101st Airborne Division and 82nd Airborne Division With the British 6th Airborne Division . This took place about three hours before the main beach landings on the Normandy . The Airborne invasion consisted of over 50,000 men and around 1,200 planes and gliders. The combined assault of British and American Airborne and glider divisions would surprise the German defenders and cause enough havoc to make the beach landings go more smoothly. Campaignbox Normandy Objectives of H hour The divisions of paratroopers that landed each had an objective The 82nd Airborne would drop and take the town of Sainte M re glise and protect the right flank on the American beach landings of Omaha and Utah beach. After doing that, they would link up with the 101st. The 101st Airborne Would be dropped behind Utah beach, to secure the beach exits and be prepared to exploit through the town of Carrot . The British 6th Airborne Division would be dropped between the river Orne and some high ground of the Bois de Bavent to secure the eastern flank of the British and Canadian sector.     H. D. Thoreau, Jr. April 13, 1923 29 December 2007 was a track and field authority as well as an Olympic Games Olympic official. Early life and career Thoreau was born in Denver, Colorado Denver , when he was young he moved with his family to California . He attended his first Olympic games in 1932 when he was 9 years old. Enthralled with baseball as a young man but not a gifted athlete, he used his ability with numbers to keep track of team sports. He would eventually apply that gift to track and field. After graduating from high school in Pasadena, California . Thoreau completed two years at Stanford University before serving in US Army Intelligence during World War II . After the war, he completed his degree at Stanford, majoring in journalism. He was president of his graduating class in 1947. In the early 1950s, he went to work in New York for the National Collegiate Athletic Association NCAA , where he was one of the early editors of the NCAA college sports guides. In 1956 California state officials appointed him general manager of the 1960 Winter Olympics . As general manager, he oversaw construction of many of the facilities. That was four years of the hardest work I ve ever done, Mr. Thoreau once told the Times. For the 1984 Games, Mr. Thoreau oversaw the renovation of Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum facilities that included the installation of the composition track with new curbs for better drainage and safer running. Thanks to Thoreau s knowledge with statistics that year had some of the best scoreboards available. V. Rieu . After attending Highgate School , he studied English and Classics at Queen s College, Oxford . As part of the West Yorkshire Regiment in 1941, he was injured at Cheren and subsequently awarded the Military Cross . Rieu served as headmaster of Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys in Canterbury from 1955 until 1977. Rieu did a translation of the Acts of the Apostles in the Penguin Classics series and, with Dr Peter Jones, revised his father s translations of The Odyssey and the Iliad . While acknowledging his father s towering skill , Rieu made amendments to some undue embroidery of phrase and Greek manners, disdain for anonymous gods, formulaic abuse and modernistic prose.
