The orchestra was founded in 1983 by a group of music lovers, led by flutist Paul Lustig Dunkel , who served for 25 years as the orchestra s music director and Conductor music conductor . The orchestra originally was known as the New Orchestra of Westchester. In the early 1990s, the name Westchester Philharmonic was adopted. It was founded in 1915 by composer and conductor Tadeusz Mazurkiewicz and Gotliba Teschnera , a cello instructor and bookstore owner. The men organized the orchestra initially as a temporary ensemble to play for a benefit for impoverished musicians. The orchestra was made up of approzimately 60 musicians, both professional and amateur. The enthusiastic reception of this benefit concert drew the patronage of industrialist Karol Wilhelm Scheilbler , who provided the finances necessary to make the orchestra a permanent ensemble. Mazurkiewicz was appointed the orchestra s first director. In 1934 the orchestra ceased activities, but resumed performances in 1938. The orchestra consists of adults who have a keen and serious interest to perform music. Formerly known as the Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra Society PCOS , the group became The Philharmonic Orchestra TPO to better reflect its intention to perform both symphonic and chamber works. The Philharmonic Orchestra seeks to breathe new life into musical works and explore a repertoire that is very much neglected by big orchestras like Singapore Symphony Orchestra SSO . The orchestra held its first concert in May 1998, performing Handel s Fireworks Music, Prokofiev s Classical Symphony and Mozart s Symphony No. 41 Jupiter . For the 2007 2008 season, TPO has been engaged by Esplanade Theatres on the Bay Esplanade Theatres on the Bay to undertake a year long performance of all Jean Sibelius Symphonies in a series of three concerts entitled Northern Exposure. The Philharmonic Orchestra is also known for its commanding standard as a pit orchestra . It has received good reviews for its work as a pit orchestra when engaged by the Singapore Dance Theatre and Singapore Lyric Opera . Since then, it has stopped collaborating with the Singapore Lyric Opera, and focuses more on presenting its own concerts, the latest of which included two Haydn symphonies.
