Image Venus real.jpg thumb 180px right The term Cytherean can be used to refer to things from or related to the planet Venus , pictured here. Cytherean is an adjective meaning pertaining to Cythera Greek , also transliterated Kythera or Kithira , a small island now part of Greece, southeast of the Peloponnesus . It is also an adjective meaning pertaining to the planet Venus . When planetary science planetary scientists began to have a need to discuss Venus in detail, an adjective was needed. Based on Latin principles, the correct adjectival form of the name would be Venerean . However, this term has an unfortunate similarity to the word venereal as in venereal diseases related to Venerean as martial is to Martian , and is not generally used by astronomers. ref Dave Hanes, http www.astro.queensu.ca hanes p014 Notes Topic 033.html PART 202 The Appearance of Venus Its Importance . Accessed Oct. 7, 2006 ref The term Venusian is etymologically messy similar to saying Earthian or Jupiterian , and a cleaner version was desired. It was suggested that since Venus had a Greek name, as well as a Roman one, this should be used however, the adjectival form of Aphrodite was aphrodisial , which again was felt to be unfortunately close to aphrodisiac , again evoking matters not directly pertaining to astronomy. A compromise was reached. In Greek mythology , the goddess Aphrodite was said to have ... Etymology The word Venusian is simply a combination of the name of the planet Venus and the suffix ian, formed on the analogy of Martian as if Marsian . It is usually pronounced IPA en v nju n or IPA en v nju n . Based on the latter pronunciation, the spelling Venutian is sometimes found. The classically correct form of the word should be Venerean or Venerian cf. lang la venereus, venerius belonging to the goddess Venus , but these forms have been used by only a few authors e.g. Robert A. Heinlein . Scientists sometimes use the adjective Cytherean to describe Venus, from the goddess epithet Cytherea . Venusian is used in preference to Venerean due Citation needed date September 2009 to the latter s use in the term venereal disease .
