It usually lies next to the cystic artery . It is of variable length. It contains a Spiral valves of Heister spiral valve , which does not provide much resistance to the flow of bile. Function Bile can flow in both directions between the gallbladder and the common hepatic duct and the common bile duct. In this way, bile is stored in the gallbladder in between meal times. The hormone cholecystokinin , when stimulated by a fatty meal, promotes bile secretion by increased production of hepatic bile, contraction of the gall bladder, and relaxation of the Sphincter of Oddi . Clinical significance Gallstones can enter and obstruct the cysticduct, preventing the flow of bile. The increased pressure in the gallbladder leads to swelling and pain. This pain is sometimes referred to as a gallbladder attack because of its sudden onset. During a cholecystectomy , the cysticduct is clipped two or three times and a cut is made between the clips, freeing the gallbladder to be taken out. Excess tears flow through nasolacrimal duct which drains into the inferior nasal meatus . This is the reason the nose starts to run when a person is crying or has watery eyes from an allergy, and why one can sometimes taste eye drops. Like the lacrimal sac, the duct is lined by stratified columnar epithelium containing mucus secreting goblet cells , and is surrounded by connective tissue. Obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct leads to the excess overflow of tears called epiphora medical epiphora . A congenital obstruction can cause cystic expansion of the duct and is called a dacrocystocele or Timo cyst. Persons with dry eye conditions can be fitted with punctal plug s that seal the ducts to limit the amount of fluid drainage and retain moisture. This works as a type of shunt to eliminate excess perilymph fluid from the perlymphatic space around the cochlea of the ear . Perilymph is continuous with cerebrospinal fluid CSF in the subarachnoid space. CSF pressure abnormalities do not generally have clinical impact on the inner ear which is explained physically by the bore diameter of the perilymphatic duct and its length. The buccinator acts as a valve that prevents inflation of the duct during blowing. Unreferenced date December 2009 Unsourced image removed Image bypassduct.gif thumb right 240px Typical bypass duct, in a high bypass ratio turbofan A bypass duct is an wikt annular annular passage that allows some of a turbofan turbofan s airflow to bypass the engine core, or gas generator . If the turbofan is unmixed, the bypass duct will terminate at the bypass nozzle. In mixed turbofans, the bypass duct leads to the cold chute of a forced mixer or cold mixer of an annular mixer. Some bypass ducts are unlined, so the bypass air must pass over a series of flange s, pipe material pipe s, etc associated with the engine core, which increases the bypass duct pressure loss. A lined bypass duct has a lower pressure loss, due to the streamlining effect of the inner wall introduced. Bypass ducts may be fitted with doors that allow the air to be diverted forward, providing reverse thrust . Air passing through an engine s core is not affected by this. This is common practice on high bypass ratio turbofans found on airliners today, such as the GE CF6 and GE90, Rolls Royce RB211 and Trent, Pratt & Whitney JT9D and 4000 etc. For a more detailed look at this issue, including consideration of different types of thrust reversal, see the reverse thrust thrust reversal page.
