The Cyrix Cx486SLC was Cyrix s first Central processing unit CPU offering, released after years of selling coprocessor s that competed with Intel Intel s units and offered better performance at a comparable or lower price. The 486SLC is based on the i386SX bus, and was intended as an entry level chip to compete with the Intel 386SX and 486SX. Texas Instruments manufactured the 486SLC for Cyrix, and also sold it under its own name ti486SLC. Later, they also released their own version of the chip, the TI486SXLC which featured 8kB internal cache vs 1kB in the original Cyrix design. Introduced in May 1992 , like the later and more famous Cyrix Cx5x86 it was a hybrid CPU, incorporating features of a new CPU in this case the Intel 80486 while having a pin out similar to the existing 386SX, enabling existing board designs to be easily modified for the new chip. It ran at speeds of 20, 25, 33, and 40  MHz, although it had difficulty running reliably at 40  MHz using some operating systems. In December 1992 Cyrix also released the Cyrix Cx486SLC e 25, 33  MHz which offered power management, and a low voltage laptop version, the 3.3v Cyrix Cx486SLC e V 20, 25  MHz . In December 1993 Cyrix released a clock doubled version 25 50  MHz cx486SLC2, as well as a clip on upgrade for 386SX systems, the cx486SRx2 16 33, 20 40 & 25 50  MHz . It ran at speeds of 25, 33, and 40  MHz. The 486DLC can be described as a 386DX with the 486 instruction set and 1K of onboard L1 cache added. A few 486SX motherboards also provided i387 sockets, but this feature was a very much a rarity. 1. Cyrix coma bug

The Cyrix coma bug is a design flaw in Cyrix 6x86 , 6x86L , and early 6x86MX Central processing unit processor s that allows a Privilege Computing non privileged program to completely lock the computer. Discovery According to Andrew Balsa, around the time of the discovery of the f00f bug on Intel Intel P5 Pentium , Serguei Shtyliov of Moscow found a flaw in a Cyrix processor while developing an Advanced Technology Attachment IDE disk driver in assembly language . Alexandr Konosevich, from Omsk , further researched the bug, and coauthored an article with Uwe Post in the German language German technology magazine, c t , calling it the hidden CLI bug CLI is the instruction which disables interrupt s in the x86 architecture . Balsa, as a member on the Linux kernel mailing list, confirmed that the following C programming language C program could be compiled and run by an Privilege Computing unprivileged user source lang c static unsigned char c 4 0x36, 0x78, 0x38, 0x36 main asm movl c, ebx n t again xchgl ebx , eax n t movl eax, edx n t jmp again n t source Execution of this program renders the processor completely useless, as it enters an infinite loop that cannot be Interrupt interrupted . This presents a Computer security security flaw because any user with access to a Cyrix system with this bug could prevent other users from using the system. Exploitation of this flaw would therefore be a denial of service attack . It is similar to execution of a Halt and Catch Fire instruction, although the coma bug is not any one particular instruction. Analysis What causes the bug is not an interrupt mask, nor are interrupts being explicitly disabled. Instead, an anomaly in the Cyrix s instruction ..., the designers at Cyrix made the xchg uninterruptible. However, because of Instruction pipeline ... being a good candidate. Cyrix suggested Serialization serializing the xchg opcode, thus bypassing ... Image Media GX.jpg thumb 140px Cyrix MediaGX, Ball grid array BGA The MediaGX CPU was an x86 processor manufactured and designed by Cyrix and later after merger manufactured by National Semiconductor , and was introduced in 1997. The core is based on the integration of the Cyrix Cx5x86 CPU core with hardware to process video and audio output XpressRAM, XpressGRAPHICS, XpressAUDIO . Following the buyout of Cyrix by National Semiconductor and the sale of the Cyrix name and trademarks to VIA Technologies , the core was developed by National Semiconductor into the Geode processor Geode line of processors, which was subsequently sold to Advanced Micro Devices . Whether this processor belongs in the fourth or fifth generation of x86 processors can be considered a matter of debate as the processor was based on the 5x86 a scaled down version of the Cyrix 6x86 . While the 5x86 was intended to compete with the Intel Intel P5 Pentium line, the 5th generation x86 , it was designed to interface with a 4th generation 80486 motherboard and had only the 486 s instruction set, lacking the ability to run software requiring Intel P5 microarchitecture Pentium s new instructions. 1. LongHaul

VIA LongHaul is a central processing unit CPU CPU throttling speed throttling and Power management power saving technology developed by VIA Technologies . By executing specialized Instruction computer science instructions , Computer software software can exercise fine Control engineering control on the CPU multiplier bus to core frequency ratio and CPU core voltage . When the computer system system first booting boots , the ratio and voltage are set to hardware Default computer science defaults . While the operating system runs, a CPU device driver driver controls the throttling according to how much load computing load is put on the CPU. This fine control over the CPU s operating parameters brings LongHaul in contrast to other competing technologies, where a CPU is typically allowed to switch between only two states one that is fast but power consuming and one that is slow but uses low power less power . However LongHaul is considered similar to Transmeta s LongRun technology. There are 3 versions of LongHaul Version 1 only supports dynamic frequency scaling and is implemented in the Cyrix III Samuel C5A core and VIA C3 C3 Samuel 2 C5B stepping 0 core. Version 2 adds voltage scaling and is implemented in the VIA C3 C3 Samuel 2 C5B stepping 1 7 and Ezra C5C cores. Version 3 was renamed to PowerSaver and is implemented in the VIA C3 C3 Ezra T C5N and Nehemiah cores as well as the VIA C7 C7 Esther C5J core. Some variants of the C7 D do not support PowerSaver.
