Caesarius ordained him in 506 to the diaconate , and, in 516, consecrated him as bishop of Toulon. St. Cyprian appears to have been present in 524 at the synod of Arles and in the following years to have attended a number of councils. At all these assemblies he showed himself a vigorous opponent of Semipelagianism . He said to have converted to Catholicism two Visigoth chiefs, Mandrier and Flavian, who became anchorite s and martyrs on the peninsula of Mandrier . Soon after the death of Caesarius d. 543 Cyprian wrote a life of his great teacher in two books, being moved to the undertaking by the entreaty of the Abbess Caesaria the Younger, who had been the head of the convent at Arles since 529. The life is one of the most valuable biography biographical remains of the sixth century. Cyprian was aided in his task by the two bishops, Firminus and Viventius, friends of Caesarius, as well as by the priest Messianus and the deacon Stephen. The main part of the work up to the fortieth chapter of the first book was most probably written by Cyprian himself. The Plague of Cyprian is the name given to a pandemic, probably of smallpox , that afflicted the Roman Empire from AD 251 onwards. It was still raging in 270, when it claimed the life of emperor Claudius II Gothicus ruled 268 70 . The plague caused widespread manpower shortages in agriculture and the Roman army. ref Zosimus New History I.16, 21, 31 ref It is named after Cyprian St. Cyprian , an early Christian writer who witnessed and described the plague. Contemporary accounts In 251 to 266, at the height of the outbreak, 5,000 people a day were said to be dying in Rome . Cyprian s biographer, Pontius the deacon, wrote of the plague at Carthage Afterwards there broke out a dreadful plague, and excessive destruction of a hateful disease invaded every house in succession of the trembling populace, carrying off day by day with abrupt attack numberless people, every one from his own house. All were shuddering, fleeing, shunning the contagion, impiously exposing their own friends, as if with the exclusion of the person who was sure to die of the plague, one could exclude death itself also. There lay about the meanwhile, over the whole city, no longer bodies, but the carcases of many, and, by the contemplation of a lot which in their turn would be theirs, demanded the pity of the passers by for themselves.
