    Sandy Kenyon , born Sanford Klein August 5, 1922 &ndash February 20, 2010 was an United States American voice over artist and character actor , best known for voicing Jon Arbuckle in the first Garfield animated television special Here Comes Garfield , and other roles in film and television . He was born in New York City , United States . Among the numerous TV series he appearred on include The Rifleman , Have Gun Will Travel , The Dick Van Dyke Show , Gunsmoke , That Girl , Bonanza , Hogan s Heroes , Adam 12 , Quincy M.E. , Knots Landing , and the Twilight Zone . Kenyon s on screen acting career benefited from his extremely distinctive physical appearance gaunt, with highly prominent cheekbones. Kenyon also acted on Broadway and in Los Angeles regional theatre. He died peacefully on February 20 at his home in Los Angeles , United States .
