Cuevade Villa Luz Cave of the Lighted House, also known as Cueva del Azufre and Cuevadelas Sardinas is a cave near Tapijulapa in the southern Mexico Mexican state of Tabasco . The springs within the cave are rich in hydrogen sulfide , a gas that is a potent respiratory toxicant and smells like rotten eggs. Within the water, sulfide is oxidized to colloidal sulfur , which gives the water a milky appearance, and sulfuric acid. The cave essentially is a maze about two kilometers in length and primarily etched out of Cretaceous limestone by the sulfuric acid in the water. Hydrogen sulfide is also used by chemoautotrophic bacteria , which form the base of the food web. The cave is a popular tourist destination and visited by many, partly because it is easily accessible. It has been featured on the BBC s series Planet Earth TV series Planet Earth , and Wonders of the Solar System TV series Wonders of the Solar System . The cave is a protected area of the Canary Islands. The cave was created around 3,000 years ago from a volcanic eruption in La Corona. An enormous lava stream flowed over the Malpa s landform Malpa s de la Corona. For a long time, the lava stream flowed which left the top part to become a cave. In about 20 spots, the cover of the cave collapsed and formed. Cueva de los Verdes is formed from parts of the volcanic soils and extends from 1 km to 6 kilometres of old lava streams, which are the second longest in the world. In earlier centuries, inhabitants throughout Lanzarote hid in this cave to protect themselves from pirates. Two kilometres, altogether seven kilometres of the cave system are developed. The cave walls are colorful. Parts of the cave are deep. Parts of the caves are covered with sea water. The cave is famous for its concert hall which is located near the entrance and the exit of the cave. There are seats in the concert hall about 15 to 20 rows with 26 seats in each row, allowing up to 500 people in the concert hall at once. The cave has a vertical range of 201 meters with its lowest point ending in a sump . The cave has long been used by the native Jivaro Indians who descend into the cave each spring using vine ladders and bamboo torches to collect fledgeling tayos the nocturnal Steatornis caripensis . Written references to the cave go back as far as 1860 and it is known to have been visited by gold seekers and military personnel in the 1960s. Von D niken popularizes the cave The Gold of the Gods The cave was popularized by Erich von Daniken s 1973 book The Gold of the Gods , in which he wrote that Juan Moricz had claimed to have explored Cuevade los Tayos in 1969 and discovered mounds of gold, unusual sculptures and a metallic library. These items were said to be located within artificial tunnels that had been created by a lost civilization with help from extraterrestrial beings. Von D niken had previously stirred public imagination by suggesting that extraterrestrials were involved in ancient civilizations in his popular book Chariots of the Gods? . The 1976 Expedition As a result of the claims published in von D niken s book, an investigation of Cuevade los Tayos was organized by Stan Hall from Britain in 1976. One of the largest ... The Santa Cuevade Covadonga lang en Holy Cave of Covadonga is a Catholicism Catholic Shrine sanctuary located in Asturias , northern Spain . It is a cave in the Picos de Europa mountains, which gives its name to the Parish administrative division parish of Covadonga in the Concejo Asturias concejo of Cangas de On s . The meaning of Covadonga , from the Latin Cova Dominica is Cave of the Lady , because the place is dedicated to the cult of the Our Lady of Covadonga Virgin of Covadonga . Description and history The origin of the cave as place of cult is controversial. The tradition has it that Pelagius of Asturias Pelagius , chasing a criminal, who had taken refuge in the cave, meets a hermit who was worshiping the Mary mother of Jesus Virgin Mary . The hermit asked Pelagius to forgive the criminal, since the criminal had resorted to the protection of the Virgin, and says that one day that he too would need to seek shelter in the Cave. Some historians say the most plausible is that Pelagius and the Christians refugees in the Cave of the Muslims, they will bring them an image of the Virgin and leave her there after his victory at the Battle of Covadonga .
