Critique of Cynical Reason is a book by the Germans German philosopher Peter Sloterdijk , published in 1983 in two volumes under the German title Kritik der zynischen Vernunft . In the first volume of Critique of Cynical Reason , Sloterdijk discusses his philosophical premises. The second volume builds on these premises to construct a Phenomenology philosophy phenomenology of action philosophy action that incorporates the many facets of cynicism as they appear in various forms of public discourse. In both volumes, the relationship between texts and images is an integral part of the philosophical discussion. Repeatedly, Sloterdijk points to the etymology etymological sound change consonant shift from the C of the Greek term kunikos to the K of the modern cynic as support for his thesis The original Cynics Greek school of philosophy established itself as a subversion of the Ancient Greece Ancient Greek Academy and as an outlet for the disempowered general populace, whereas the Modernity Modern industry industrial and contemporary post industrial system degrades the concept so it applies primarily to mercantilism mercantile exchanges of tradable goods, including ideas. Critique of technology is a theory which analyzes the negative impacts of technologies. Proponents of these theory argue that, in all advanced industrial societies whether capitalist or not , technology becomes a means of domination, control and exploitation, or more generally something which threatens the survival of humanity. Prominent authors elaborating a critique of technology are, e.g.. Jacques Ellul , Ivan Illich , Langdon Winner , Joseph Weizenbaum , Theodore Roszak scholar Theodore Roszak , Neil Postman and Lewis Mumford . In the 1970s in the US, the critique of technology became the basis of a new political perspective called anarcho primitivism , which was forwarded by thinkers such as Fredy Perlman , Derrick Jensen , John Zerzan , and David Watson anarchist David Watson . They proposed differing theories about how it was industrial society, and not capitalism as such, that was at the root of contemporary social problems. This theory was developed in the journal Fifth Estate in the 1970s and 1980s, and was influenced by the Frankfurt School , the Situationist International , Jacques Ellul and others. The critique of technology overlaps with the philosophy of technology but whereas the latter tries to establish itself as an academic discipline the critique of technology is basically a political project, not limited to academia . It features prominently in neomarxism Herbert Marcuse , ecofeminism Vandana Shiva and in Postdevelopment Theory postdevelopment Ivan Illich Further reading Michael Adas, Machines as the Measure of Men Science, Technology, and Ideologies of Western Dominance , Cornell University Press 1990 Jacques Ellul , The Technological Society , Trans. primarysources date December 2010 The McCloskey critique refers to a critique of post 1940s official modernist methodology in economics , inherited from logical positivism in philosophy. Immanent critique is the philosophical or sociological strategy that analyzes cultural forms by locating contradictions in the rules and systems necessary to the production of those forms. Contrasted with transcendental Immanuel Kant Kantian critical philosophy , this method aims to contextualize not only the object of its investigation, but also the ideology ideological basis of that object both the object and the category to which it belongs are shown to be products of a historical process. If formerly the gods had dwelt above the world, they had now become its center.
