The C90 was a development of the Cray Y MP architecture. Compared to the Y MP, the C90 processor had a dual vector pipeline and a faster 4.1  ns clock cycle 244  MHz , which together gave three times the performance of the Y MP processor. The maximum number of processors in a system was also doubled from eight to 16. The C90 series used the same Model E IOS Input Output Subsystem and UNICOS operating system as the earlier Y MP Model E. The C90 series included the C94 , C98 and C916 models configurations with a maximum of four, eight, and 16 processor respectively and the C92A and C94A air cooled models . Maximum static RAM SRAM memory was between 1 and 8 GB, depending on model. The D92 , D92A , D94 and D98 also known as the C92D , C92AD , C94D and C98D respectively variants were equipped with slower, but higher density DRAM memory, allowing increased maximum memory sizes of up to 16 GB, depending on the model. 1. Cray SV1

The Cray SV1 is a vector processor supercomputer from the Cray Research division of Silicon Graphics introduced in 1998. The SV1 has since been succeeded by the Cray X1 and X1E vector supercomputers. Like its predecessor, the Cray J90 , the SV1 used CMOS processors, which lowered the cost of the system, and allowed the computer to be air cooled. The SV1 was backwards compatible with J90 and Cray Y MP Y MP software, and ran the same UNIX derived UNICOS operating system . The SV1 used Cray floating point representation, not the IEEE 754 floating point format used on the Cray T3E and some Cray T90 systems. Unlike earlier Cray designs, the SV1 included a vector cache. It also introduced a feature called multi streaming, in which one processor from each of four processor boards work together to form a virtual processor with four times the performance. The SV1 processor was clocked at 300 MHz. Later variants of the SV1, the SV1e and SV1ex , ran at 500 MHz, the latter also having faster memory and support for the SSD I Solid State Storage Device. Systems could include up to 32 processors with up to 512 shared memory buses. Multiple SV1 cabinets could be clustered together using the GigaRing I O channel, which also provided connection to HIPPI , FDDI , Asynchronous Transfer Mode ATM , Ethernet and SCSI devices for network, disk, and tape services. In theory, up to 32 nodes could be clustered together, offering up to one teraflop in theoretical peak performance. An X2 blade comprises two nodes, each with four symmetric multiprocessing vector processors and 32 or 64 GB of shared memory. Each node has a peak performance of more than 100 gigaflops . X2 processors are connected using a radix 64 fat tree interconnect implemented by the YARC router ASIC . X2 blades also link into the XT5h system via its SeaStar2 processor interconnect. Up to 256 X2 blades can be installed in an XT5h system. The X2 processor nodes integrate with the Cray XT5h s UNICOS lc OS, user environment, and storage subsystem, as part of the Rainier project. 1. Cray APP

The Cray APP Attached Parallel Processor was a parallel computer sold by Cray Research from 1992 onwards. It was based around the Intel i860 microprocessor and could be configured with up to 84 processors. The architecture was based around computational nodes of 12 processors interconnected by a shared bus, with multiple nodes connected to each other, memory and I O nodes via an 8 8 crossbar switch . The APP was marketed as a matrix co processor system and required a SPARC based host system to operate, such as the Cray S MP . Connection to the host system was via VMEbus or HiPPI . A fully configured APP had a peak performance of 6.7 single precision gigaflops . The APP was originally designed by FPS Computing as the FPS MCP 784. FPS were acquired by Cray Research in 1991, becoming Cray Research Superservers Inc., and the MCP 784 was relaunched by Cray in 1992 as the APP.
