For the American politician Thomas W. Cumming Thomas Cumming was an Thirteen Colonies American merchant of the 18th century who built up a large commercial empire in West Africa. He is the best known for the role he played in the 1758 Capture of Senegal in which he submitted a plan to the British war leader William Pitt which advocated an attack on France s valuable but ill defended African colonies. ref Anderson p.306 ref Cumming was born in New York City New York , and raised as a Quaker , something which later earned him the nickname of the fighting quaker . ref Brown p.165 ref Capture of Senegal Further Great Britain in the Seven Years War Cumming had travelled to West Africa extensively, and was aware of the enormous wealth and future potential of the French colonies along the Senegal River Senegal and Gambia River Gambia rivers. He advocated to William Pitt, the Southern Secretary an expedition to seize these valuable settlements. Pitt agreed to despatch a force in 1758 which in April arrived of West Africa. Cumming had gone ahead to meet with local African leaders to try and gain their support for the British attack. He was successful, and a number of African troops assisted the British in capturing the settlement of Saint Louis, Senegal Saint Louis which fell without firing a shot. Cumming made a fortune in captured goods which were brought back to London. Particularly valuable were the large amounts of gum arabic which were used by silk weavers. Pitt was impressed enough to send two further expeditions which led to the capture of the island of Goree and the French trading station on the Gambia. Orphan date February 2009 Angus Cumming produced the first collection of Strathspeys to be published by a person from Strathspey . His Collection of Strathspeys or Old Highland Reels was published in 1780 and contains 60 tunes. Angus Cumming himself claims in the preface that he follows the profession of his forefathers in being a Musician in Strathspey. Thomas Newte in his Tour of England and Scotland in 1781 attributes the strathspey style to the Brownes of Kincardine on Spey and the Cummings of Freuchie. now Grantown on Spey Angus Cumming describes the Strathspey as an Old Highland Reel and indeed twenty six of the tunes in the collection appear with an alternative Goidelic languages Gaelic title. It is most likely that Angus Cumming would have spoken Gaelic and he would have been surrounded by people who did so, on an everyday basis. The Gaelic influence in the area and the music is most probably where the dotted rhythms of the Strathspey originated, coming from both Gaelic speech patterns and the bagpipes . Within the collection, we can find a number of cases, eighteen tunes in all, where there is an irregular use of either the dotted rhythm or the key signature . Whether these are errors in printing or intentional is not known. Nearly a third of the tunes contained in the collection were never published before. Many which had been published before were transformed into Strathspeys rather than straight undotted reels and in ways which are rhythmically much more complex than before.
