Cotnari IPA ro kot nar is a village and the center of the eponymous Commune in Romania commune in Ia i County , Romania , in the informal region of Moldova Romanian region Moldova . It is located north west of Ia i and south of H rl u , in a major wine producing region of Romania, and is famous for the wine variety known as Gras de Cotnari . C rjoaia, the forest of Dumbrava Ro ie, and other sites in Cotnari are regional tourist spots. The commune is composed of eleven villages Bahluiu, C rjoaia, Cire eni, Cotnari, F g t, Hodora, Horodi tea, Iosupeni, Lup ria, Valea Racului and Zbereni. History Proofs of habitation in the area go back to the Cucuteni culture a fortress dating from the 6th or 5th century BC was discovered on the nearby C t lina Hill nowadays a nature reserve . First attested in 1448, Cotnari was the site of a strong Romanian Roman Catholic Church Roman Catholic community composed mainly of Germans of Romania Germans and Hungarian minority in Romania Magyars . The establishmment of vineyards is attributed by local tradition to an initiative of Moldavia n List of rulers of Moldavia Prince Stephen III of Moldavia Stephen the Great , under whose rule the village rose to the status of alternate residence, while stone structures and roads to serve the wine trade were built in the area.
