It consists of a list of place names covering the world from India to Ireland . Textual evidence indicates that the author frequently used maps as his source. The surviving texts are quite challenging. The three manuscript copies are distanced from the autograph original manuscript by three or four generations. As a result, the copies are plagued by errors of spelling, word division, omission, and errors of hearing The text was apparently dictated at one point. . The text to text variations are not limited to the place names, but are also significant in the intervening commentary. Thus, the bulk of the blame cannot be placed on the original author. The most recent critical edition of the three manuscripts is that of Joseph Schnetz, Itineraria Romana, vol. John Fillian Floruit fl. 1658 1680 , was an engraver. Fillian was a pupil of William Faithorne the Elder , and worked in his style, though he never attained his excellence. Evelyn, in his Sculptura 1662 , speaks of him as J. Fellian, disciple of Mr. Faithorne, who is a hopeful young man. He died early, about 1680, before these hopes could be realised. Very few of his engravings exist, notably a portrait of Thomas Cromwell, Earl of Essex , published by P. Stent in 1658, a good work a portrait of his master, Faithorne, from a drawing by himself a copy of J. Payne s portrait of Paracelsus Dr. Michael, after Guido Reni and the frontispiece to P. RomanMilitary The Rudge Cup is a small enamelled bronze cup found in 1725 at Rudge, in Wiltshire . The cup was found down a well on the site of a Roman villa . It is important in that it lists five of the forts on the western section of Hadrian s Wall , thus aiding scholars in identifying the forts correctly. The information on the cup has been compared with the two major sources of information regarding forts on the Wall, the Notitia Dignitatum and the Ravenna Cosmography . The cup is in the possession of the Duke of Northumberland and is on display at Alnwick Castle . A replica of the cup is on display at the British Museum . Description It believed that the cup once formed part of a set of ornamental souvenir bowls. It shows a schematic drawing of Hadrian s Wall originally picked out in coloured enamels with turrets and milecastle milecastles . One of the best qualities of the Renaissance Period was its everlasting concern with the elements of the natural world. David Kandel was one of the best known pioneers of botanical art and science. However, very few facts are verifiable regarding his personal life, because very few events in his life are identifiable from surviving records. David Kandel was probably born in Strasbourg , in 1520. He married in 1554 and 33 years later, in 1587, he was named owner of a house . David Kandel died in 1592. His works and woodcuts are varied, from scientific botanical illustrations to illustrations from chapters or scenes from the Holy Bible. The Kreuterbuch or The Book of the Herbs , by Hieronymus Bock , is a superb achievement full of beautiful woodcuts that were seen as the best of botanical art for the next two centuries. David Kandel contributed with 550 woodcuts to this masterpiece. Born in Covilh at the end of the fifteenth century, Faleiro and his brother Francisco Faleiro , also a cosmographer, served the Spain Spanish king Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor Charles I in Seville . Faleiro, one of the first to apply the most rigorously scientific method of determining latitude and longitude , had earlier served John II of Portugal and his successor, Manuel I of Portugal . Faleiro was certain that south of the Terras de Vera Cruz i.e. Brazil , at 40th parallel south 40 degrees latitude , there was an Atlantic passage that led to the Pacific Ocean South Seas . The sought after Maluku Islands Spice Islands would, by Faleiro s calculations, fall on the Spanish side of the Treaty of Tordesillas line of Tordesillas . The merchant Christopher de Haro helped Faleiro and Magellan present their proposal before the Spanish royal counselors. Faleiro planned to accompany Magellan on his voyage around the world.
