Unreferenced date December 2009 Mental substance refers to the concept held by dualism dualists and idealism idealists , that minds are made up of non physical substance. This substance is often referred to as consciousness . This is opposed to the materialism materialists , who hold that what we normally think of as mental substance is ultimately physical matter i.e., brains . Ren Descartes Descartes , who was most famous for the assertion I think therefore I am, has had a lot of influence on the mind body problem. He used a more precise definition of the word substance than is currently popular that a substance is something which can exist without the existence of any other substance. For many philosophers, this word or the phrase mental substance has a special meaning. Gottfried Leibniz , belonging to the generation immediately after Descartes, held the position that the mental world was built up by monad s, mental objects that are not part of the physical world. Image SubstanceOfFire.jpg right frame Cover from the L.A. Theatre Works audiocassette with Ron Rifkin and Shirley Knight The Substance of Fire is a play by Jon Robin Baitz . At its core is Isaac Geldhart, a childhood survivor of the Holocaust , who arrived in New York City an orphan , reinvented himself as a bon vivant, married well, and found fame and fortune as a champion of authors who are passionate about their work rather than its best seller potential. Faced with a family business conflict, the potential Japan Japanese takeover of his increasingly insolvent firm, he must browbeat his three adult children, all principal stockholders whom he dismisses in varying degrees, into accepting his plan to publish a six volume scholarly work on Nazi medical experiments, despite their belief that a highly successful commercial novel is the only thing that will keep them from going under. The Playwrights Horizons production, directed by Daniel Sullivan director Daniel Sullivan , opened on March 17, 1991. The cast included Ron Rifkin , Sarah Jessica Parker , Patrick Breen , Jon Tenney , and Maria Tucci . Rifkin won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor in a Play. Baitz and Sullivan reteamed for the 1996 film version, in which Rifkin and Parker reprised their stage roles. The cast also included Timothy Hutton , Tony Goldwyn , Lee Grant , Elizabeth Franz , Dick Latessa , and Eric Bogosian . cleanup date December 2009 Shadow and Substance is an award winning four act play theatre play written in 1937 by Paul Vincent Carroll . In 1938 it won the New York Drama Critics Circle award for best foreign play. First published by Samuel French in 1944. Set in Ireland , the play has a cast of 6 men and 4 women. According to George Jean Nathan blockquote deals with the Catholic Church in Ireland. Its theme lies in the ramifications of faith as practiced by the Church s various constituents faith that, for all its sincerity, has drifted from its deepest moorings, and the manner in which a true, steadfast, innocent, and unselfish believer, a young girl, brings the contentious others, through the uncorrupted purity and simplicity of her own faith, back to first principles. And the role of the young girl, a little caretaker in the house of the canon, though built out of materials that in cruder hands would quickly betray their spirit and such a restrained gentility of writing ink that, if it is cast at all appropriately, it can hardly fail to dig into an audience s emotions. Unreferenced date February 2008 Ergastic substances are non protoplasm materials found in Cell biology cells . The living protoplasm of a cell is sometimes called the bioplasm and distinct from the ergastic substances of the cell. The latter are usually organic or inorganic substances that are products of metabolism, and include crystals, oil drops, gums, tannin s, resins and other compounds that can aid the organism in defense, maintenance of cellular structure, or just substance storage. Ergastic substances may appear in the protoplasm , in vacuole s, or in the cell wall . Carbohydrates Cellulose and starch are the main ergastic substances of plant cells. Cellulose is the chief component of the cell wall, and starch occurs as a reserve material in the protoplasm. Starch, as starch grains , arise almost exclusively in plastid s, especially leucoplast s and amyloplast s. Proteins Although protein s are the main component of living protoplasm, proteins can occur as inactive, ergastic bodies&mdash in an amorphous or crystalline or crystalloid form. A well known amorphous ergastic protein is gluten . Fats and oils Fat s lipid s and oils are widely distributed in plant tissues. Substances related to fats&mdash wax es, suberin , and cutin &mdash occur as protective layers in or on the cell wall. Crystals Animals eliminate excess inorganic materials plants mostly deposit such material in their tissues. Such mineral matter is mostly salts of calcium and anhydrides of silica . Raphides are a type of elongated crystalline form of calcium oxalate aggregated in bundles within a plant cell.
