The Coronet Theatre is a large live music and night club venue with a 2,600 capacity located at New Kent Road 28 New Kent Road in Elephant and Castle , south central London , England . The historic venue has been operating as an entertainment venue for over 100 years and to this day has managed to retain all of its art deco features. The site was first occupied by the Theatre Royal, built in 1872 and destroyed by fire only six years later. Renovations were initiated by Jethro Thomas Robinson after the fire, and completed by Frank Hatcham, to what became the Elephant and Castle Theatre in 1879, where a very young Charlie Chaplin performed. The Theater was converted to an ABC cinema in 1928, a 3,100 seat cinema designed by Frank Matcham with a revolving steam driven organ. During the World War II , when London was being destroyed by The Blitz , the building stood strong and was often used as a shelter. In the 1950s, the cinema made headlines when the manager exhibited the Bill Haley & His Comets movie Rock Around the Clock film Rock Around the Clock and the youthful audience ran riot. In 1966, with the onset of twinning, the Elephant and Castle Cinema was acquired by ABC Cinemas and split into a complex of three cinemas and also a luxury lounge was introduced. The first film to be exhibited was Bonnie and Clyde film Bonnie and Clyde in 1966. After several more name changes, it became the Coronet Cinema in 1981. The Coronet Cinema closed down in 1999, leaving the Elephant and Castle area with no cinemas, but the adjoining Oakmayne Plaze development, completed in 2009, includes a 5 screen cinema. The guitar has been manufactured a number of times since its first production on the 1950s, guitar is not currently being manufactured. History The Coronet was first manufactured by Epiphone under the Gibson Guitar Corporation Gibson brand in 1959. It was priced at approximately 120, and was seen as a reliable entry level guitar. Originally the Coronet came with a single Epiphone New York pickup in the treble position. In 1959 Epiphone began shipping new Coronets with a P 90 pickup and began offering the Coronet with its signature cherry red finish. Some Coronets manufactured in 1964 were made under the Dwight Guitars Dwight brand. Dwight was a house brand used by Epiphone for Sonny Shields Music in East Saint Louis Illinois , which was owned by Charles Dwight Shields. These Dwight brand Coronets featured a D on the pickguard and the Dwight logo on their peghead. In the 1970s, production of the Coronet came to a halt when Epiphone packed up and left its facilities in Kalamazoo, Michigan to move overseas. There was a short run of Coronets in the late 1990s, which were made in Korea. These featured OBL model pickups, a single coil in the neck position and a humbucker in the bridge position, with a pull out tone knob to tap the humbucker. As was the case with the original Coronet, the hardware and style of the Coronet varied through this short run. orphan date August 2010 Coronet Flats also known as Coronet Court is a residential apartment building on the corner of Brunswick Street, Brisbane Brunswick Street and Elystan Road, New Farm, Queensland , Australia . With its prominent siting, unusual form, and striking art deco style, Coronet Flats is considered one of the most beautiful and recognisable private buildings of the 1930s in Brisbane. History Coronet Flats was completed in November 1933 and was described at the time as having the architectural dignity of a mansion ref http trove.nla.gov.au ndp del article 1142063?searchTerm coronet 20flats ref . Max Strickland, Melbourne businessman and building developer, determined that Brisbane was lacking up to date, well serviced flats and contracted to have Coronet Flats built. Initially, Strickland planned an extension to be constructed adjacent probably at 999 Brunswick Street that would double the size of the building if the development proved successful. The two buildings would have formed a courtyard between them for a swimming pool, extra garages, and laundries. ref http trove.nla.gov.au ndp del article 22158471?searchTerm coronet 20flats ref This is probably where the alternative name Coronet Court is derived. The building was very popular at the time with four of the nine flats let prior to completion and remains so today. Strickland sold the building in 1939 since then it has stayed within the O Connor family. Design The site overlooks New Farm Park across Brunswick Street enjoying an open, north eastern aspect and Strickland was keen to capitalise on this through climate appropriate design. Coronet Industries Incorporated is a chemical company that operated a plant converting phosphate to animal feed outside of Plant City , Florida . The plant operated for over 100 years before closing in March 2004 in the midst of an investigation by the United States Environmental Protection Agency , the State of Florida, and the Environmental Protection Commission of Hillsborough County, Florida Hillsborough County . Residents of the surrounding community alleged that pollution from the plant leached into the groundwater and caused increased rates of cancer amongst other health problems. Arsenic , boron , cadmium , lead and other dangerous chemicals were detected in residential wells surrounding the plant. The federal Environmental Protection Agency cautioned state officials about potential health risks associated with leaky equipment and corroded stacks allowing underwater leaching and spills from Coronet, but residents were not notified of ongoing problems with the company s lack of environmental controls. The state Department of Environmental Protection Secretary David Struhs expressed concern over potential systemic problems that prevented the situation from being identified and corrected sooner in the Tampa office of the DEP. Legislation requiring the state of Florida to notify area residents in such events was proposed. A 2006 report by the state of Florida said that those who were exposed to the Coronet site after 2003 were at no health risk, although there was insufficient evidence to draw a conclusion about those who were exposed before that time. Approximately 1,200 residents who live near the plant and former employees of Coronet Industries have filed a class action lawsuit against the company, alleging amongst other things that the pollution from the plant has harmed their health and lowered property values.
