unreferenced date September 2011 Mergeto hasty generalization date January 2010 The logical fallacy of converse accident also called reverse accident , destroying the exception , or a dicto secundum quid ad dictum simpliciter is a deductive fallacy that can occur in a statistical syllogism when an exception to a generalization is wrongly called for. For example If we allow people with glaucoma to use medical marijuana , then everyone should be allowed to use marijuana. The Induction philosophy inductive version of this fallacy is called hasty generalization . See faulty generalization . This fallacy is similar to the slippery slope , where the opposition claims that if a restricted action under debate is allowed, such as allowing people with glaucoma to use medical marijuana, then the action will by stages become acceptable in general, such as eventually everyone being allowed to use marijuana. The two arguments imply there is no difference between the exception and the rule, and in fact fallacious slippery slope arguments often use the converse accident to the contrary as the basis for the argument. However, a key difference between the two is the point and position being argued. The above argument using converse accident is an argument for full legal use of marijuana given that glaucoma patients use it. The argument based on the slippery slope argues against medicinal use of marijuana because it will lead to full use. The opposing kind of dicto simpliciter is accident fallacy accident . In the mathematical theory of automorphic form s, a converse theorem gives sufficient conditions for a Dirichlet series to be the Mellin transform of a modular form. More generally a converse theorem states that a representation of an algebraic group over the adeles is automorphic whenever the L functions of various twists of it are well behaved. Weil s converse theorem The first converse theorems were proved by harvs txt last Hamburger author link Hans Hamburger year 1921 who characterized the Riemann zeta function by its functional equation, and by harvtxt Hecke 1936 who showed that if a Dirichlet series satisfied a certain functional equation and some growth conditions then it was the Mellin transform of a modular form of level  1. harvtxt Weil 1967 found an extension to modular forms of higher level, which was described by harvtxt Ogg 1969 loc chapter V . Weil s extension states that if not only the Dirichlet series math L s sum frac a n n s math but also its twists math L chi s sum frac chi n a n n s math by some Dirichlet character s , satisfy suitable functional equations relating values at s and 1&minus s , then the Dirichlet series is essentially the Mellin transform of a modular form of some level. Higher dimensions J. W. Cogdell, H. Jacquet, I. I. Piatetski Shapiro and J.
