A burgrave is literally the count of i.e. appointed over a castle or fortified town. The English language English form is derived through the French language French from the German language German Burg graf and Dutch language Dutch burg or burch graeve Mediaeval Latin language burcgravius or burgicomes . The title is originally equivalent to that of castellan lang la castellanus or ch telain , meaning keeper of a castle and or fortified town both can be called Burg in German, burg in Dutch . In Germany , owing to the peculiar conditions of the Holy Roman Empire , though the office of burgrave had become a sinecure by the end of the 13th century, the title, as borne by feudal nobles having the status of Reichsf rst Prince of the Empire , obtained a quasi princely significance. There were four hereditary burgraviates ranking as principalities within the Holy Roman Empire The Burgraviate of Antwerp in present Belgium , The Burgraviate of Magdeburg , The Burgraviate of Friedberg, Hesse Friedberg , The Burgraviate of Nuremberg this last title was created in 1060 by the Emperor Henry IV, Holy Roman Emperor Henri IV for the house of the County of Vohburg Vohburg , and then passed to the house of Hohenzollern , which, since Frederick I, Holy Roman Emperor , continued to hold it until 1801 . It was still included among the subsidiary titles of several German semi sovereign princes and the king of Prussia , whose ancestors were burgraves of Nuremberg for over 200 years, maintained the additional style of Burggraf von N rnberg . In the Low countries , the rank of burggraaf developed into the nobiliary equivalent of a viscount see that article . After eighteen months of vacancy since the death of Henry VII, Duke of Bavaria Henry VII , the duchy of Bavaria was filled on 2 February 1049 by the Emperor Henry III with Cuno. Cuno was the possible successor of childless emperor. He was not the choice of the Bavarian nobility, but was intended to draw the duchy closer to the crown. This failed, for Cuno married against the will of the emperor when he wed Judith of Schweinfurt, daughter of Otto III, Duke of Swabia . He tried to increase his power in Bavaria and was in conflict with Gebhard III, Bishop of Regensburg . Finally, he was summoned to a Christmas court at Merseburg in 1052 1053 and there deposed. He was replaced early the next year by Henry s unexpectedly new born son, later the Emperor Henry IV . Cuno, who had not come to blows with the bishop, returned to Bavaria and rebelled. He was in league with the rebellious Welf, Duke of Carinthia Welf of Carinthia and Andrew I of Hungary . He died in exile after trying to assassinate the Emperor and seize the throne, having been abandoned by Welf, in 1055. He was buried in St Mariengraden in Cologne in 1063. His enumeration is a little confused. He is sometimes not considered a Conrad, thus Conrad II, Duke of Bavaria Conrad II is numbered ConradI ... ConradI died August 20, 997 was Duke of Swabia from 983 until 997. His appointment as duke marked the return of Conradines Conradine rule over Swabia for the first time since 948. When Duke Otto I, Duke of Bavaria Otto I unexpectedly died during the Holy Roman Empire Imperial campaign in Italy of 981 982, he left no heirs. To fill the vacancy, Emperor Otto II appointed Conrad as Duke of Swabia. Conrad is notable for being the first Swabian duke to keep the title in the family after his death in 997 he was succeeded by his son Hermann II, Duke of Swabia Hermann II . There is considerable confusion about Conrad s family. The identities of his parents are not known for sure. This same situation exists for his wife, who is unlikely to have been a daughter of Liudolf, Duke of Swabia , the son of Emperor Otto I . He had at least six children, including his successor, Hermann II. There is a wealth of literature surrounding the attempt by de Armin Wolf Historiker Wolf and also de Donald C. Jackman Jackman , starting in 1980 to make his wife the daughter of Liudolf, however these attempts have been rebuffed by de Eduard Hlawitschka Hlawitschka .
