A compter , sometimes referred to as a counter , was a type of small England English prison controlled by a sheriff. The inmates were usually civil prisoners, for example dissenter s and debtors. The Borough Compter was a small compter or prison initially located in Southwark High Street but moved to nearby Tooley Street in the 17th century, where it stood until demolished until 1855. It took its name from The Borough , a historic name for the Southwark area of London on the south side of the River Thames from the City of London . The Poultry Compter also sometimes known as Poultry Counter was a small compter or prison run by a Sheriffs of the City of London Sheriff in the City of London from medieval times until 1815. It took its name from its location on a section of Cheapside known as Poultry due to the produce that was originally sold in streetmarkets along that part of the thoroughfare. The Giltspur Street Compter was a small Compter or prison , mainly used to hold debtors . It was situated in Giltspur Street , Smithfield, London Smithfield , close to Newgate , in the City of London , between 1791 and 1853. The Compter was adjacent to Christ s Hospital boys school 1553 1902 . Its construction began in 1787, and the Compter was ready for occupation in 1791. In 1815 it took some prisoners from the nearby Poultry Compter prior to its closure. The Wood Street Counter , or Wood Street Compter , was a small prison within the City of London in England . It was primarily a debtors prison , and also held people accused of such misdemeanours as public drunkenness, although some wealthier prisoners were able to obtain alcohol through bribery. The prison was built and opened in 1555, replacing the earlier Bread Street Compter, from which many prisoners were transferred. The Compter was originally one of two prisons, the other, the Poultry Compter , located on the Poultry. Both were destroyed during the Great Fire of London in 1666, although the Poultry Compter was rebuilt, and another compter, Giltspur Street Compter was constructed in 1791. Among its occupants were Captain George Orrell , the Catholic martyr George Napper , the Sabbatarian dissenter John Traske , the poet Edmund Gayton , a young Jonathan Wild , and highwayman James Hind . The Wood Street Compter was still active 1727 when The London Gazette 6 July p4 listed 13 insolvent debtors awaiting court on 25 August. During the closure of the compters, debtors were held in prisons in Southwark , including the Marshalsea Prison Marshalsea and King s Bench Prison s, Borough Compter and Horsemonger Lane Gaol . John Wright fl. 1602 1658 was a major London publisher and bookseller and one of the two booksellers who sold Shakespeare s Sonnets in 1609. He also was a member of the syndicate that printed the Shakespeare First Folio in 1623. He published several editions of Christopher Marlowe Christopher Marlowe s Doctor Faustus beginning with the second in 1616, was an official printer for Parliament , and published several early newspapers and ballads. Career Wright finished his apprenticeship in 1602 and published many notable books, setting up his business at the Kings Head in the Old Bailey. He was the chief publisher of ballads in partnership with Fr. Coles, T. Vere, and W. Gilbertson. However, during the negotiations William Walworth , the Lord Mayor of London , lured Wat Tyler away and stabbed him, and when Tyler took refuge in St Bartholemew s church he was dragged out and beheaded. The Revolt later subsided. Located on the junction of Giltspur Street and Cock Lane is the Golden Boy of Pye Corner , a cherub which is a symbol of gluttony , the sin which supposedly led to divine retribution in the form of the Great Fire of London . The inscription reads The Boy at Pye Corner was erected to commemorate the staying of the Great Fire which beginning at Pudding Lane was ascribed to the sin of gluttony when not attributed to the Papists as on the Monument, and the Boy was made prodigiously fat to enforce the moral. Life Fryer, born at Balsham , Cambridgeshire , was educated at Eton College and went to King s College, Cambridge in 1517. On 16 September 1528 he addressed from prison an elegant Latin letter to Cardinal Wolsey .
