  1. Compromise of Caspe

The Compromise of Caspe made in 1412 was an act and resolution of parliamentary representatives on behalf of the Kingdoms of Aragon and Kingdom of Valencia Valencia and the County of Barcelona , to resolve the interregnum commenced by the death of King Martin I of Aragon in 1410 without a legitimate heir, in Caspe . The succession laws of the Aragonese Empire at that time were rather hazy, based more on custom than any specific legislation, and even case law did not exist. All successions in time of united Barcelona Aragon had been to the eldest son, to the next younger brother, or to the only daughter. However, earlier successions indicated that agnate s males in male line of Aragonese royal family had precedence over daughters and descendants of daughters for example, Martin himself had succeeded over daughters of his late elder brother, King John I. However, very distant agnates had lost out to the daughter of the late king in 11th century, when Petronila of Aragon succeeded over claims of the then agnates second cousins or the like , the Kings of Navarre and Castile. 1. Ioannina compromise

The Ioannina compromise also spelt Joanina takes its name from an informal meeting of foreign ministers of the states of the European Union which took place in the Greek city of Ioannina on 27 March 1994. Among the decisions taken at the meeting was a Council of the European Union Council decision on the question of qualified majority voting in an enlarged 16 member European Community . The decision was later adjusted in the light of Norway s decision not to join. The resulting compromise laid down that if members of the Council representing between 23 votes the old blocking minority threshold and 26 votes the new threshold expressed their intention of opposing the taking of a decision by the Council by qualified majority, the Council will do all within its power, within a reasonable space of time, to reach a satisfactory solution that can be adopted by at least 68 votes out of 87. A declaration annexed to the Treaty of Amsterdam extended this compromise until the next enlargement took effect. The Ioannina compromise was superseded by the provisions of the Treaty of Nice 2001 Treaty of Nice . It came up again during the negotiations about the Treaty of Lisbon on 21 and 22 June 2007 in Brussels. From 2014 a new version of the 1994 Ioannina Compromise should take effect, which would allow small minorities of EU states to call for re examination of EU decisions they do not like. ref Honor Mahony http euobserver.com ?aid 24343 leaders scrape treaty deal at 11th hour , EU Observer , 23 June 2007 ref External links, References references http europa.eu scadplus constitution doublemajority de.htm The Union s decision making procedures on the SCADPlus web about Ioannina compromise see there under A specific transitional clause in the event of a narrow majority http europa.eu scadplus glossary ioannina compromise en.htm Ioannina compromise in the Europa web portal Europa glossary. 1. Massachusetts Compromise

Unreferenced date December 2009 The Massachusetts Compromise was the solution reached in the controversy between Federalism United States Federalists and Anti Federalists in the debate over the ratification of the United States Constitution in which the Federalists won. The compromise helped garner sufficient support for the Constitution in order to ensure its ratification and lead to the adoption of the first ten amendments, the Bill of Rights . Anti Federalists feared that the Constitution would overly centralize government and diminish individual rights and liberties. They sought to amend the Constitution, particularly with a Bill of Rights as a condition before ratification. Federalists insisted that the document had to be accepted or rejected as written. When efforts to ratify the Constitution encountered serious opposition in Massachusetts , two noted anti Federalists, John Hancock and Samuel Adams , helped negotiate a compromise. The anti Federalists agreed to support ratification of the constitution, with recommendations for amendments should the document go into effect. The Federalists agreed to support the proposed amendments, specifically a bill of rights. Following this compromise, Massachusetts voted to ratify the Constitution on February 6, 1788. Five states subsequently voted for ratification, four of which followed the Massachusetts model of recommending amendments along with their ratification. 1. Compromise agreement

Unreferenced date December 2008 In the United Kingdom , a compromise agreement is a specific type of contract , regulated by statute , between an employer and its employee or ex employee under which the employee receives a negotiated financial sum in exchange for agreeing that he or she will have no further claim legal claim against the employer as a result of any breach of a statutory obligation by the employer. Except when Acas ACAS have been involved and arranged a COT3 settlement, compromise agreements are the only means whereby an employee can waive statutory claims such as unfair dismissal , discrimination or redundancy. The agreement will only be valid where i it is in writing and ii the employee has received independent legal advice advice from a solicitor who has professional indemnity insurance . An employee cannot compromise potential future claims, though claims that have already arisen, unknown to the employee, can be waived. In practice, a compromise agreement will also contain a waiver of any claim for breach of contract as well as statutory claims, though such a waiver does not need to satisfy the same requirements in order to be valid. Each agreement must be tailored to meet the facts and circumstances of the case. It is therefore impossible to adopt a one size fits all approach to drafting of a compromise agreement. The detail and existence of a compromise agreement should remain confidential from third parties. The advantage for the employer is that they are able to draw a line under an employee s departure and feel protected from future claims. The advantage for the employee is the financial sum received in return. In addition to confidentiality clauses, it may also include an agreed reference. 1. Luxembourg compromise

Unreferenced date December 2009 The Luxembourg compromise or Luxembourg Accords was an agreement reached in January 1966 which resolved differences within the then European Economic Community . President Charles de Gaulle of France favoured a protected market for France s agricultural products. In 1965 the European Commission s president, Walter Hallstein , suggested an extension of the Commission s powers and a general increase in the supranational nature of the Community. He also proposed an increase in the use of qualified majority voting in commercial matters dealt with by the Commission. De Gaulle opposed Hallstein s proposals. De Gaulle also strongly sought a financing agreement for the Common Agricultural Policy CAP . The deadline for this was approaching in 1965. Hallstein made the political judgment that De Gaulle would not risk losing the CAP agreement and upsetting French farmers before a December 1965 presidential election. Hallstein calculated that to secure the CAP De Gaulle would compromise on the institutional questions. The other five countries refused to compromise the agenda of the meeting and wanted de Gaulle to accept the whole package. After a tense meeting on June 28 30 1965, De Gaulle s response was to withdraw France s representative in Brussels and to boycott discussions of institutional change. This strategy led to what was called the empty chair crisis . The crisis was ended by the Luxembourg compromise in January 1966. It was an informal agreement stating that when a decision was subjected to qualified majority voting, the commission would postpone a decision if any member states felt that very important interests were under threat. In effect the compromise meant that Qualified Majority Voting was used far less often and unanimity became the norm .... 1. Atlanta compromise

The Atlanta compromise was an agreement struck in 1895 between African American leaders and Southern white leaders. The agreement was that Southern blacks would work meekly and submit to white political rule, while Southern whites guaranteed that blacks would receive basic education and due process in law blacks would not agitate for equality, integration, or justice, and Northern whites would fund black educational charities. ref Lewis 2009 , pp 180&ndash 181. ref ref Croce, pp 1&ndash 3. ref The compromise was announced at the Atlanta Exposition Speech . The primary architect of the compromise, on behalf of the African Americans, was Booker T. Washington , president of the Tuskegee Institute . After the turn of the 20th century, other black leaders, most notably W. E. B. Du Bois and William Monroe Trotter ndash a group Du Bois would call The Talented Tenth , took issue with the compromise, instead believing that African Americans should engage in a struggle for civil rights. W. E. B. Du Bois, coined the term Atlanta Compromise to denote the agreement. The term accomodationism is also used to denote the essence of the Atlanta compromise. After the death of Booker T. It retained the bicameral legislature as proposed by James Madison , along with proportional representation in the lower house, but required the upper house to be weighted equally between the states. Context On May 29, 1787, Edmund Randolph of the Virginia delegation proposed the creation of a bicameral legislature .
