  1. Column (database)

In the context of a relational database Table database table , a column is a set of data values of a particular simple datatype type , one for each Row database row of the table. ref name ColumnOther The term column also has equivalent application in other, more generic contexts. See e.g., Flat file database , Table information . ref The columns provide the structure according to which the rows are composed. The term Field computer science field is often used interchangeably with column , although many consider it more correct to use field or field value to refer specifically to the single item that exists at the intersection between one row and one column. For example, a table that represents companies might have the following columns ID integer identifier, unique to each row Name text Address line 1 text Address line 2 text City integer identifier, drawn from a separate table of cities, from which any state or country information would be drawn Postal code text Industry integer identifier, drawn from a separate table of industries etc. Each row would provide a data value for each column and would then be understood as a single structured data value, in this case representing a company. More formally, each row can be interpreted as a relvar , composed of a set of tuple s, with each tuple consisting of the two items the name of the relevant column and the value this row provides for that column. table border 1 tr th th Column 1 th Column 2 tr th Row 1 td Row 1, Column 1 td Row 1, Column 2 tr th Row 2 td Row 2, Column 1 td Row 2, Column 2 tr th Row 3 td Row 3, Column 1 td Row 3, Column 2 table See also Column oriented DBMS Optimization for column centric queries Column data store A similar object used in distributed data store s Row database References references database stub Categories Category Data modeling Interwikies ca Columna base de dades cs Datab zov sloupec es Columna base de datos lv Kolonna datub ze nl Kolom database ja ...   more details

A typical stratigraphic column shows a sequence of sedimentary rock s, with the oldest rocks on the bottom and the youngest on top. In areas that are more geologically complex, such as those that contain intrusive rock s, Fault geology fault s, and or metamorphism , stratigraphic columns can still indicate the relative locations of these units with respect to one another. However, in these cases, the stratigraphic column must either be a structural column, in which the units are stacked with respect to how they are observed in the field to have been moved by the faults, or a time column, in which the units are stacked in the order in which they were formed. geol stub category stratigraphy es Columna estratigr fica ...   more details

Unreferenced date December 2009 Image StylidiumFlora5.jpg thumb 200px right Flower of Stylidium turbinatum , showing the column. The column , or technically the gynostemium , is a reproductive structure that can be found in several plant families Aristolochiaceae , Orchidaceae , and Stylidiaceae . It is derived from the fusion of both male and female parts stamen s and carpel pistil into a single organ. This means that the style and stigma of the pistil, with the filaments and one or more anthers, are all united. Orchidaceae Image VanillaFlowerLongitudinalSection en.png thumb right 400px center Longitudinal view of a vanilla flower, showing the column center The stigma sits at the apex of the column in the front, but is pointing downwards after resupination the rotation by 180 degrees before unfolding of the flower . This stigma has the form of a small bowl, the clinandrium , a viscous surface embedding the generally single anther. On top of it all is the anther cap . Sometimes there is a small extension or little beak to the median stigma lobe, called rostellum . Column wings may project laterally from the stigma. The column foot is formed by the attachment of the labellum lip to the basal protruding part of the column. One speaks of a mentum chin if the lateral sepal s are also basally adnate attached to the foot of the column . The column both releases pollen and also receives it from another individual for fertilization. In the Orchidaceae family, unlike almost all other flowering plants , the single male anther at the tip of the column produces pollen that is not free and powdery but held in waxy masses of two, four or six pellets called pollinium pollinia . The transfer of pollinia from one flower to another, though highly efficient, is often reliant upon one particular species of arthropod s and it can be catastrophic for the population if its pollinator disappears from the community. Some of the common parameters analyzed in the water column are pH , turbidity , temperature , salinity , total dissolved solids , various pesticide s, pathogen s and a wide variety of chemicals and biota ecology biota . The concept of water column is quite important, since many aquatic phenomena are explained by the incomplete vertical mixing of chemical, physical or biological parameters. For example, when studying the metabolism of Benthos benthic organisms , it is the specific bottom layer concentration of available chemical s in the water column that is meaningful, rather than the average value of those chemicals throughout the water column. Hydrostatic pressure can be analyzed by the height of a water column, which effectively yields the pressure at a given depth of the column.
