  1. Coincidence of wants

Economics sidebar The coincidence of wants problem often double coincidence of wants is an important category of transaction costs that impose severe limitations on economies lacking money and thus dominated by barter or other in kind transactions. The problem is caused by the improbability of the wants, needs or events that cause or motivate a transaction occurring at the same time and the same place. One example is the bar musician who is paid with liquor or food, items which his landlord will not accept as rent payment, when the musician would rather have a month s shelter. If, instead, the musician s landlord were to throw a party and desire music for it, hiring the musician to play it by offering the month s rent in exchange, a double coincidence of wants would exist. In kind transactions have several limitations, most notably timing constraints. If you wish to trade fruit for wheat, you can only do this when the fruit and wheat are both available at the same time and place and, additionally, only if someone wishes to trade wheat for fruit . That may be a very brief time, or it may be never. With money , broadly speaking, any commodity used as a medium of exchange you can sell your fruit when it is ripe and take the money. You can then use the money to buy wheat when the wheat harvest comes in. Thus the use of money makes all commodities more liquid. Besides barter, other kinds of in kind transactions also suffer from the coincidence of wants problem in the absence of money. For example, when wealth is transferred during marriage, divorce, inheritance, and other crucial life events, or during the collection of taxes or tribute, it is improbable that this event will coincide with the recipient s desire for the commodities the payor can readily obtain, unless they are intermediate ... the basic problem of barter they require an improbable coincidence of wants and events. The term double coincidence of wants was coined by William Stanley Jevons . ref Joseph Ostroy Ostroy, Joseph ...   more details

  1. Coincidence point

Unreferenced date December 2009 In mathematics , a coincidence point or simply coincidence of two function mathematics mappings is a point in their domain mathematics domain having the same image point under both mappings. Formally, given two mappings math f,g colon X rightarrow Y math we say that a point x in X is a coincidence point of f and g if f x g x . Coincidence theory the study of coincidence points is, in most settings, a generalization of fixed point mathematics fixed point theory, the study of points x with f x x . Fixed point theory is the special case obtained from the above by letting X Y and taking g to be the identity mapping . Just as fixed point theory has its fixed point theorem s, there are theorem s that guarantee the existence of coincidence points for pairs of mappings. Notable among them, in the setting of manifold s, is the Lefschetz fixed point theorem Lefschetz coincidence theorem , which is typically known only in its special case formulation for fixed points. Coincidence points, like fixed points, are today studied using many tools from mathematical analysis and topology . An Equaliser mathematics Equaliser is a generalization of the coincidence set. 1. Coincidence circuit

In physics , a coincidence circuit is an electronic device with one output and two or more inputs. The output is activated only when signals are received within a time window accepted as at the same time and in parallel at both inputs. Coincidence circuits are widely used in particle physics experiments and in other areas of science and technology. Walther Bothe shared the Nobel Prize in Physics Nobel Prize for Physics in 1954 for his discovery of the method of coincidence and the discoveries subsequently made by it . 1. Dogshitter Wants

Refimprove date May 2011 Orphan date March 2009 Dogshitter Wants is a series of ten short cartoons broadcast during the early hours of the morning on MTV2 . The programme was made by Matt Miller and Dominic del Torto in Macromedia Flash Flash . It is self proclaimed, Officially the most best insane cartoon . It was puzzling statements such as these, in particular, that helped it gain initial notoriety. It also sparked immediate controversy through its inflammatory name and subliminal content. Dogshitter Wants is a cult show and a vehicle for the surreal sketches and word play of del Torto and Miller. Although ostensibly concerned with jokes about cultural figures like Elton John & Michel Gondry , quite large parts of the show were impenetrably obscure, and were probably only fully understood by the creators and their immediate friends and associates, particularly those who were part of the dot com industry centred around Brick Lane in London, England. Dogshitter Wants , although only achieving minor commercial success, takes a small place in the peculiar tradition of English psychedelia and wordplay influenced by Lewis Carroll . The shows were produced in the Biganimal studios in the Old Truman Brewery in Brick Lane. The music of alternate electronica band Add n to x feature in each episode, but were not broadcast by MTV2 for copyright reasons. The studio created original and widely considered to be inferior music for broadcast under the name Terrirer Sex Tantrum. The original music remains on the Dogshitter Wants website. Each episode features a different artist, some well known professional illustrators and designers, Paris Hair , Dan Abbott, Jon Burgerman and 14 year old schoolboy, Reece Lewis. 1. Coincidence counting (physics)

Unreferenced date July 2009 In quantum physics , coincidence counting is used in experiments testing particle non locality and quantum entanglement . In these experiments two or more particles are created from the same initial packet of energy, inexorably linking quantum entanglement entangling their physical properties. Separate particle detector s measure the quantum state s of each particle and send the resulting signal to a coincidence counter. In any experiment studying entanglement, the entangled particles are vastly outnumbered by non entangled particles which are also detected patternless noise that drowns out the entangled signal. In a two detector system, a coincidence counter alleviates this problem by only recording detection signals that strike both detectors simultaneously or more accurately, recording only signals that arrive at both detectors and correlate to the same emission time . This ensures that the data represents only entangled particles. However, since no detector counter circuit has infinitely precise temporal resolution due both to limitations in the electronics and the laws of the Uncertainty Principle Energy time uncertainty principle Universe itself , detections must be sorted into time bins detection windows equivalent to the temporal resolution of the system . Detections in the same bin appear to occur at the same time because their individual detection times cannot be resolved any further. Thus in a two detector system, two unrelated, non entangled particles may randomly strike both detectors, get sorted into the same time bin, and create a false coincidence that adds noise to the signal. This limits coincidence counters to improving the signal to noise ratio to the extent that the quantum behavior can be studied, without removing the noise ... has only been possible through the use of coincidence counters. for the electronic device Coincidence circuit Coincidence detection in the context of neurobiology is a process by which a neuron or a neural circuit can encode information by detecting the occurrence of timely simultaneous yet spatially separate input signals. 1. Washington Large Area Time Coincidence Array

The Washington Area Large scale Time coincidence Array WALTA is a cosmic ray physics experiment run by the University of Washington to investigate ultra high energy cosmic rays 10 19 eV . The program uses detectors placed at Seattle area high schools and colleges which are linked via the internet, effectively forming an Extensive air shower Extensive Air Shower array. In addition to working on the unexplained levels of Ultra High Energy cosmic ray UHECR flux, it hopes to serve as a pedagogical tool for increasing the physics involvement of high schools and community colleges with a University level physics experiment. Each site has three to four scintillation detectors with the goal of having enough sites to cover a 200  km sup 2 sup area around the city of Seattle. WALTA is a part of the larger NALTA ref http neutrino.phys.washington.edu walta NALTA.html ref project which hopes to combine data from several WALTA like projects to further the exploration of UHE cosmic rays. Background Cosmic Rays Cosmic rays are high energy particles that bombard the Earth s atmosphere. ref Narlikar 1977 , page 97. ref About 89 of these are protons. ref http www.srl.caltech.edu personnel dick cos encyc.html ref The flux of cosmic rays is approximately proportional to 1 E sup a sup where E is the energy and a is somewhere between 2 and 3 up to the UHECR limit. Cosmic rays created in our galaxy with energy of less than about 10 18eV get trapped by the galaxy s magnetic field. Particles above that should escape, so high energy cosmic rays would likely come from outside our galaxy. According to the Greisen, Zatsepin, Kuzmin GZK cutoff, inter galactic cosmic rays above 10 20eV should be absorbed by the Cosmic microwave background radiation due to pion production and pair production. In pion production, the protons UHECRs above 10 20 eV have enough energy to interact with the CMBR to create ... card DAQ which is set to record an event based on a certain coincidence. The DAQ card also has ...   more details
