for other figures with the same name as well as for the genus of flounders Cleisthenes disambiguation unreferenced date November 2007 Cleisthenes also Clisthenes or Kleisthenes was the tyrant of Sicyon from c. 600 570 BC, who aided in the First Sacred War against Kirrha that destroyed that city in 595 BC. He is also told to have organized with success a war against Argos because of his anti Dorians Dorian feelings. After his victory he abolished all the rhapsodists of Homer , because they vaunted the citizens of Argos . The key innovation of his reign, which Herodotus mentions, is the reformation of the tribal system in the city of Sicyon. Herodotus states that he gave new names to all the tribes, calling his own non Doric tribe, rulers of the people, and naming the other three Doric tribes after various animals. Herodotus does not however, relate exactly what Cleisthenes reform was. Whatever this reform was, it must have been successful for all the tribes kept their names for a long time, even after the death of Cleisthenes. Cleisthenes of Sicyon organized a competition with his beautiful daughter Agariste of Sicyon Agariste as the prize. The two main competitors for her were the Alcmaeonid Megacles , and Hippocleides . Because Hippocleides made a fool of himself by dancing drunkenly in front of Cleisthenes, Megacles was chosen to marry Agariste. A relative of Cleisthenes was the later Cleisthenes of Athens and Agariste, the mother of Pericles . His death is estimated around or before 532 BC. The conflict arose due to Kirrha s frequent robbery and mistreatment of pilgrims going to Delphi and their encroachments upon Delphic land. The war resulted in the defeat and destruction of Kirrha. The war is notable for the use of chemical warfare at the siege of Kirrha, in the form of hellebore being used to poison the city s water supply. Justifications of war In ancient Greece, Kirrha was a heavily fortified city which controlled access to Delphi from the Corinthian Gulf . Kirrha took advantage of its location to rob and mistreat pilgrims to the Delphic Oracle , to tax Delphi, and to steal land from Delphi, land considered sacred to Apollo . This behavior prompted many of the other Greek city states to form the Amphictionic League , a military alliance dedicated to protecting Delphi, circa 600 BC. The League consulted the oracle for advice on dealing with Kirrha, and the reply was a call for total war . The members of the league vowed to completely destroy Kirrha and ravage the surrounding areas. To this they added a curse in the name of Apollo that the soil should bring forth no crops, that the children of the women and livestock should be deformed, and that the entire ethnic group that inhabited the city should be eradicated. ref name Mayor Mayor, Andrienne. The Prytaneis sing. prytanis were the executives of the Boule ancient Greece boule of ancient Athens . The term like basileus or Tyrant tyrannos is probably of pre Greek origin possibly cognate to Etruscan language Etruscan e pruni . Origins and organization When Cleisthenes reorganized the Classical Athens Athenian government in 508 7 BCE, he replaced the old Solon ian boule ancient Greece boule , or council, of 400 with a new boule of 500. The old boule consisted of 100 members of each of the four ancestral tribes. Cleisthenes created ten new tribes and made the boule consist of 50 men from each of these tribes. Each tribe s delegation would be an executive of the boule for Attic calendar one tenth of the year , so that ten groups of prytaneis served each year, a position granted by sortition. The executive officers were known as prytaneis and their term of office as a prytany . Duties The prytaneis served every day during their prytany. They formally called to meeting the full boule ancient Greece boule and the ecclesia ancient Athens ecclesia of Athens, though in practice many meetings were mandatory and evidence suggests that persuasive individuals could enjoin the prytaneis to call or not to call a supplementary meeting. The prytaneis received ambassadors from foreign states and generally conducted the day to day business of the state. They ate at public expense in the Tholos , a circular edifice constructed for them next to the boule house. Each day, for one 24 hour period, one member of the 50 prytaneis was selected by lot to serve as the foreman epistates , caretaker . He administered the state seal and the keys to the state treasuries and archives. He was, in effect, the chief executive officer of Athens . No man was allowed to hold this office more than once, and so probably more than half of all adult male Athenians held it, at one time or another.
