  1. Innovation and its Discontents

orphan date March 2009 Innovation and its Discontents How our Broken Patent System is Endangering Innovation and Progress, and What to do About it is a book ISBN 0 691 11725 X by Adam B. Jaffe and Josh Lerner . Princeton University Press published the book in 2004. The authors of the book outline changes made to the patent system in the United States in the late 1980s and early 1990s which they say has led to a situation in which patents have become extremely powerful economic weapons, and are being issued irresponsibly and at an unreasonable rate. The end result, the authors claim, is that United States American innovation is being stifled unintentionally as a result of a few simple bureaucratic changes centralizing the appellate court appeal to the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and making patent application fees the primary source of revenue for the United States Patent and Trademark Office . The authors argue that the establishment of the CAFC has led to judicial tunnel vision because the judges of the CAFC are only asked to rule on matters of intellectual property, they come to value the current patent system too highly, and tend to side disproportionately with patent holders. The authors frame the current debate about patents in historical terms, citing both times when patents were freely granted as royal favors, such as the Elizabethan era in England , as well as times when patents were impossible to obtain, or in the case of the Netherlands in the 1830s, completely abolished. 1. Civilization and its Enemies

Unreferenced auto yes date December 2009 Orphan date December 2009 Image Civilizationanditsenemies.jpg thumb right Civilization and its Enemies The Next Stage of History 2004 is a book by American author Lee Harris essayist Lee Harris . Harris argues that the Western world has neglected, or forgotten, the concept of the enemy , and that this was an important factor in failing to prevent the September 11 terrorist attacks . Quote Forgetfulness occurs when those who have been long accustomed to civilized order can no longer remember a time in which they had to wonder whether their crops would grow to maturity without being stolen or their children sold into slavery by a victorious foe . . . They forget that in time of danger, in the face of the enemy, they must trust and confide in each other, or perish . . . They forget, in short, that there has ever been a category of human experience called the enemy. The title of this book, and perhaps its content may have been inspired by Sigmund Freud s Civilization and Its Discontents which discusses the conflict between the individual s antisocial desires of the ego and id with the constraints of a civilized and orderly society. Contents Chapter 1 The Riddle of the Enemy Chapter 2 Our World Historical Gamble Chapter 3 Defining the Enemy Chapter 4 The Grand Illusion Chapter 5 Ruthlessness and the Origin of Civilization Chapter 6 The Birth of Patriotism and the Historic Role of the United States Chapter 7 Two Types of Cosmopolitanism Liberal Versus Team Chapter 8 How Reason Goes Wrong Chapter 9 Tolerance A Case Study Chapter 10 The Origin of the Enemy Chapter 11 The Rare Virtues of the West Chapter 12 Conclusion The Next Stage of History References reflist Unreferenced date November 2010 DEFAULTSORT Civilization And Its Enemies Category 2004 books Category 21st century history books Category History books about politics Category History books about the United States Category History books about civilization Category Political bo ...   more details

  1. Eros and Civilization

Frankfurt School Eros and Civilization is one of German philosopher and social critic Herbert Marcuse s best known works. Written in 1955, it is a synthesis of Karl Marx and Sigmund Freud . Its title alludes to Freud s Civilization and Its Discontents . Marcuse s vision of a non repressive society, based on Marx and Freud, anticipated the values of 1960s counterculture countercultural social movements . In the book, Marcuse discusses the social meaning of biology history seen not as a class struggle , but a fight against repression of our instincts. He argues that advanced industrial society modern capitalism is preventing us from reaching the non repressive society based on a fundamentally different experience of being, a fundamentally different relation between man and nature, and fundamentally different existential relations . ref Marcuse, Herbert. 1. Insect Civilization

Multiple issues notability September 2010 unreferenced December 2009 in universe October 2009 In the science fiction television series Lexx , the Insect Civilization is an ancient race of massive millipede like organisms bent on destroying the Brunnen G and all of human race Humanity . The Early War The Insect Civilization s first forays into the Brunnen G war are sketchy at best, but it seems as though through this war, they gained an instinctive hate for humans in general and the Brunnen G in particular. The war lasted for many years, and the Insects renowned cunning was not enough. Although it is never clear exactly how the Brunnen G actually defeated the Insects, when faced with the task of destroying Mantrid , Kai LEXX Kai remarked that the Brunnen G were able to defeat the insects because they were methodical, and therefore predictable. Insect Reproduction Although the exact means of Insect reproduction is never made clear in the series, the Giga Shadow the last surviving member of the Insect Civilisation had many young attached to its body, despite having no mate. This could mean that Insects either reproduce asexually, are self fertilised, or the Gigashadow was inseminated by artificial means. Do They Die? Insects are capable of surviving beyond the death of their bodies. Insects possess a special transference organ that allow them to transfer their essence into a suitable host. These hosts are usually their offspring. This act of mental parasitism is common to all Insects, but as most Insects were destroyed, leaving them with a dearth of young to inherit their consciousnesses, their defeat in the Great Insect War was assured. The last surviving Insect was desperate enough to avoid this problem by transferring its essence into a succession of human hosts while its body recovered its strength.
