The Synod of Pistoia was a diocesan synod held in 1786 under the presidency of Scipione de Ricci 1741 1810 , bishop of Pistoia , and the patronage of Leopold II, Holy Roman Emperor Leopold, grand duke of Tuscany , with a view to preparing the ground for a national council and a reform of the Tuscany Tuscan Church. Circular letter On January 26 the grand duke issued a circular letter to the Tuscan bishops suggesting certain reforms, especially in the matter of the restoration of the authority of diocesan synods, the purging of the missals and breviaries of legends, the assertion of episcopal as against papal authority, the curtailing of the privileges of the monastic orders, and the better education of the clergy. In spite of the hostile attitude of the great majority of the bishops, Bishop de Ricci issued on July 31 a summons to a diocesan synod, which was solemnly opened on the September 18. It was attended by 233 beneficed secular and 13 regular priests, and decided with practical unanimity on a series of decrees which, had it been possible to carry them into effect, would have involved a drastic alteration of the Church on the Febronianism lines advocated by Febronius . File Chiesa di san pier maggiore di pistoia, painting dated 1865, maybe by E. Burci.jpg thumb 260px San Pier Maggiore in a 1865 canvas. San Pier Maggiore is a former church in Pistoia , Tuscany , central Italy . The church is notable for its exterior polychrome decorations, one of the last examples in the city. The church probably dates to Lombards Lombard times. It was enlarged in 1086 and again in 1124, receiving its current appearance in 1263. The central portal s architrave is attributed to the workshop of Guido da Como , and depicts a Jesus Giving the Keys to St. Peter, with the Virgin and the Apostles . The fa ade has maintained the original Romanesque architecture Romanesque appearance, and, like the nearby church of San Bartolomeo in Pantano , is divided into five compartments with bichrome decoration. In 1640 the interior was largely restored and enriched with Baroque style decorations. Today the church is deconsecrated, the former convent housing the State Institute of Arts. File Pistoia chiesa san andria 004.JPG thumb 240px Fresco of the Blessing Christ . The Pieve di Sant Andrea is a church in Pistoia , Tuscany , central Italy . It is dedicated to St. Andrew the Apostle , and includes the famous Pulpit of St. Andrew by Giovanni Pisano . The church probably dates from as early as the 8th century, though in a smaller size. In the 12th century it was extended in length. The fa ade shows the typical bichrome marble decoration of the Pistoiese Romanesque architecture Romanesque style, executed in the mid 12th century by Gruamonte and his brother Adeodatus, who was also responsible for the sculptures and for the portal s architrave . The latter depicts the Voyage of the Magi , a rare theme whose use here derives from the fact that the church was located on the Via Francigena , by which, in the Middle Ages, the pilgrims reached Rome from France . The decorated capitals are by a Master Henry, while the small statue of St. Andrew in the lunette over the portal is reminiscent of Giovanni Pisano s style. In the late 15th century the upper fa ade was finished and the central nave was vaulted. The frescoes in the apse date to 1506, executed by Bernardino del Signoraccio. Today only the central part, with the Father supported by Four Angels , survives. The altars in the aisles were added in the 17th century, with paintings by artists such as Cristofano Allori and Girolamo Scag.
