Ornament and Crime is an essay written in 1908 by the influential and self consciously modern Austria n architect Adolf Loos under the German language German title Ornament und Verbrechen . It was under this challenging title that in 1913 the essay was translated into English language English The evolution of culture marches with the elimination of ornament from useful objects , Loos proclaimed, linking the optimistic sense of the linear and upward progress of cultures with the contemporary vogue for applying evolution to cultural contexts. Fact date December 2007 In Loos s essay, passion for smooth and precious surfaces ref http www.studio international.co.uk archive loos 1973 186 957.asp Studio International , 1973, Volume 186, Number 957, Adolf Loos the new vision ref he explains his philosophy, describing how ornamentation can have the effect of causing objects to go out of style and thus become obsolete. It struck him that it was a crime to waste the effort needed to add ornamentation, when the ornamentation would cause the object to soon go out of style. Loos introduced a sense of the immorality of ornament, describing it as degenerate , its suppression as necessary for regulating modern society. He took as one of his examples the tattoo ing of the Papuan and the intense surface decorations of the objects about him Loos considered the Papuan not to have evolved to the moral and civilized circumstances of modern man, who, should he tattoo himself, would either be considered a criminal or a degenerate. ref cite book author Loos, A. year 1908 title Ornament and Crime location Innsbruck, reprint Vienna, 1930 ref The essay was written when Art Nouveau , which Loos had excoriated even at its height in 1900, was about to show a new way of modern art. A biological ornament is a structure of an animal that appears to serve a decorative function rather than an ostensible, utilitarian function. Ornaments are used in displays to attract mates. An animal may shake, lengthen, or spread out its ornament in order to get the attention of the opposite sex, which will in turn choose the most attractive one. Ornaments are most often observed in males and picking an extravagantly ornamented male benefits females because those good genes will be passed on to her offspring, increasing their survival or reproductive fitness. These genes are considered good solely due to the fact that it will increase the likelihood that a female will be attracted to the male that carries them. These structures usually serve as Animal sexual behaviour sexual cues, which are sensory signals used lead to mating responses. Photograph of Muslim papier mach ornament painters in the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, taken by an unknown photographer in the 1890s. This image shows the interior view of a studio, with workers surrounded by painted papier mach objects. Kashmiri papier mach is famous for its decorative flower and bird designs, which owe much to the influence of Mughal art, and grew up in that area due to the introduction of the paper making industry during the time of the Mughal Emperor Babur. Papier mach objects are either made by pasting layers of soaked paper onto a mould, or by putting paper pulp into a mould and allowing it to set. When the required thickness is achieved the surface is covered with a layer of chalk and glue and then burnished to give a smooth base for the painted designs. Today the usual background colour is black but for luxury items this is painted with gold and silver paint and sometimes even gold and silver leaf. Compo is a mouldable resin worked either by hand or more usually pressed into moulds to produce decorative work. It s now most commonly seen as part of Gilding gilded picture frames, but was in use for many smaller decorative mouldings from the later part of the Baroque period. ref Cite book title Step By Step Compo and Mold Making last Loeffler publisher Loeffler Valac Industries date 1992 isbn 0963238752 ref A Compo recipe A basic compo recipe, which can have many variations. ref Cite book title Framing & Gilding last Curson first Paul publisher Skills Publishing Pty Ltd location Australia isbn 0 646 12673 3 ref Take 250 grammes cabinetmakers pearl glue and soak in adequate cold water for several hours. Drain the excess water, then heat in a double boiler or electric gluepot to 70 C until liquid. Add 20 mls of glycerine and 10 grammes of zinc oxide . Powder 100gms of rosin colophony and heat in a small pan. Beware of fire The rosin should melt at around 90 C. Add 20 mls Venice turpentine and 60mls linseed oil , and mix well. Mix the melted rosin etc. into the hot glue and stir well. The compo itself can now be made by pouring the combined contents above onto 600 700 grammes of Calcium carbonate whiting in a bowl. Stir the initial hot mixture with a wooden spoon. Rub talcum powder on your hands to prevent sticking , then work the mixture by hand until it has the consistency of glazing putty. Work the compo into conveniently sized flat cakes, then wrap them well in kitchen cling film Saran wrap . Compo will keep in a freezer for a month. Defrost the compo completely before placing it in a bain marie to soften it ready for moulding. The recipe proportions aren t rigid. The pearl glue can be increased to 300 grammes for a harder and stronger result, or then the rosin to 150 grammes for a more elastic and generally more robust composition. Some workers prefer to use rabbit skin glue as used in bookbinding rather than pearl or hide glue, giving a more flexible result. S ... more details
