Chovot HaLevavot or ovot HaLebabot , Hebrew lang he , English Duties of the Heart , is the primary work of the Jewish philosopher Bahya ibn Paquda , full name Bahya ben Joseph ibn Pakuda . Ibn Paquda was a Jew ish philosopher and rabbi who seemly lived in Saragossa , Spain , in the first half of the eleventh century. It was written in Judeo Arabic but in Hebrew characters approximately in 1040 under the title Kitab al Hid ya il Fara id al Qul b , Book of Direction to the Duties of the Heart , sometimes titled as Guide to the Duties of the Heart, and translated into Hebrew by Judah ibn Tibbon in the years 1161 80 under the title Chovot HaLevavot . There was another contemporary translation by Joseph Kimhi , but its complete text did not endure the test of time. Organization and influences The Duties of the Heart is divided into ten sections termed Shaarim gates, corresponding to the ten fundamental principles which, according to Bahya s view, constitute man s spiritual life. This treatise on the inner spiritual life makes numerous references to both biblical and Talmud ic texts. It draws on the contemporary Islam ic Sufi , specifically influences present in his contemporary Islamic Spain Medieval Spain and also to the Classics translated by the school of Hunayn bin Ishaq . It is located in the west slope of Thrypti mountain and exits east of Vasiliki, Lasithi Vasiliki village in the plain of Ierapetra . The gorge is about 1.5km long, particularly narrow at several points and has walls rising up to 300m. Its name derives from the verb hasko lang el meaning to open or part widely, to gape. Ha is considered to be one of the wildest gorges in Crete and one of the most difficult to cross. Being practically inaccessible to people, the Ha gorge maintains a rich and diverse Bird avifauna . He was born to a yangban family of the Jinju Ha Korean name Ha lineage. He passed the lower gwageo national service examination in 1435 and received the top score on the higher examination in 1438. He was appointed to the Hall of Worthies by Sejong of Joseon Sejong , and became the leader gyori of that institution in 1442. He participated in the editing of various histories and other texts. Ha withdrew from government service in 1453 after the murder of Kim Jong seo by Prince Suyang later Sejo of Joseon King Sejo . However, he returned not long thereafter and was made vice minister of rites by Danjong of Joseon Danjong in 1455. In that year, Danjong was overthrown by Sejo. Ha joined in a plot to overthrow Sejo and restore Danjong in 1456, but the plot was uncovered through the betrayal of fellow plotter Kim Jil . Refusing to repent from his deeds after torture, Ha was put to death.
