unreferenced date February 2008 A chirp is Scratching scratch , a term used by Disc Jockey turntablists . It involves the use of record hand movement and the cross fader. Technique The scratch is somewhat difficult to perform because it takes a good amount of coordination. The scratch starts out with the cross fader open. The DJ then moves the Gramophone record record forward while simultaneously closing the previously opened channel ending the first sound . Then, in a reverse fashion, the DJ opens the channel while moving the record backwards creating a more controlled sounding baby scratch . Done in quick cession it sounds as though a chirp sound is being produced. Category DJing Hiphop stub ...   more details

  1. Chirplet transform

Image Wave chirp wavelet chirplet.png thumb 244px Comparison of wave , wavelet , chirp , and chirplet In signal processing , the chirplet transform is an inner product of an input signal with a family of analysis primitives called chirplets . Similarity to other transforms Much as in the wavelet transform , the chirplets are usually generated from or can be expressed as being from a single mother chirplet analogous to the so called mother wavelet of wavelet theory . What is the chirplet and chirplet transform? The term chirplet transform ref http wearcam.org chirplet vi91 index.htm ref was coined by Steve Mann , as the title of the first published paper on chirplets. The term chirplet itself apart from chirplet transform was also used by Steve Mann, Domingo Mihovilovic, and Ronald Bracewell to describe a windowed portion of a chirp function. In Mann s words ref http wearcam.org chirplet.htm ref quote A wavelet is a piece of a wave, and a chirplet, similarly, is a piece of a chirp. More precisely, a chirplet is a windowed portion of a chirp function, where the window provides some time localization property. In terms of time frequency space, chirplets exist as rotated, sheared, or other structures that move from the traditional parallelism with the time and frequency axes that are typical for waves Fourier and short time Fourier transform s or wavelet s. The chirplet transform thus represents a rotated, sheared, or otherwise transformed tiling of the time frequency plane. 1. Duplex perception

Duplex perception refers to the natural language linguistic phenomenon whereby part of the sound acoustic signal is used for both a Speech communication speech and a nonspeech percept. A listener is presented with two simultaneous, Dichotic listening dichotic stimuli . One ear receives an isolated third formant transition that sounds like a nonspeech chirp. At the same time the other ear receives a base syllable . This base syllable consists of the first two formants , complete with formant transitions, and the third formant without a transition. Normally, there would be peripheral Auditory masking masking in such a binaural listening task but this does not occur. Instead, the listener s percept is duplex, that is, the completed syllable is perceived and the nonspeech chirp is heard at the same time. This is interpreted as being due to the existence of a special speech module. The phenomenon was discovered in 1974 by Timothy C. Rand at the Haskins Laboratories associated with Yale University . ref Rand TC. Dichotic release from masking for speech. J Acoust Soc Am. 55 3 678 80. 1. Bluestein's FFT algorithm

Bluestein s FFT algorithm 1968 , commonly called the chirp z transform algorithm 1969 , is a fast Fourier transform FFT algorithm that computes the discrete Fourier transform DFT of arbitrary sizes including prime number prime sizes by re expressing the DFT as a convolution . The other algorithm for FFTs of prime sizes, Rader s FFT algorithm Rader s algorithm , also works by rewriting the DFT as a convolution. In fact, Bluestein s algorithm can be used to compute more general transforms than the DFT, based on the unilateral z transform Rabiner et al. , 1969 . Algorithm Recall that the DFT is defined by the formula math X k sum n 0 N 1 x n e frac 2 pi i N nk qquad k 0, dots,N 1. math If we replace the product nk in the exponent by the identity nk &ndash k &ndash n sup 2 sup n sup 2 sup k sup 2 sup 2, we thus obtain math X k e frac pi i N k 2 sum n 0 N 1 left x n e frac pi i N n 2 right e frac pi i N k n 2 qquad k 0, dots,N 1. math This summation is precisely a convolution of the two sequences a sub n sub and b sub n sub of length N n 0,..., N &ndash 1 defined by math a n x n e frac pi i N n 2 math math b n e frac pi i N n 2 , math with the output of the convolution multiplied by N phase factors b sub k sub sup sup . This species is endemic to extreme northeastern Australia , in northern Queensland from near Coen to Mareeba west of Cairns . Description The Buff breasted Buttonquail measures from 18 23  inches 7 9  inches and usually weighs over 110 grams 4 oz . Both the tail and wings are short. The back is chestnut. The sides of the head are marked with chestnut on an otherwise plain gray head while the breast is warm buff colored. The Painted Buttonquail and the Brown Quail both coexist with this species. The Buff breasted is larger and longer legged than either and is quite different different from the all dark quail. The Painted species is almost totally mottled, with bold white spotting on the breast and no warm buff coloration. The most similar species to the Buff breasted is the Chestnut backed Buttonquail , which does not overlap in the wild. The advertising or booming call made by the female is ooom oom oom , repeated up to 20 times. The notes are almost inaudible initially, then become gradually louder, higher pitched and shorter until they are far carrying. The males will respond with a deep, rapid chu chu chu whistle. Other calls, perhaps in reaction to danger, include gug gug gug , a soft chirp chirp chirp and a loud kwaare kwaare . Distribution and habitat These birds favor lowland, subcoastal grasslands or woodlands. They may be found at any elevation to 400 m 1320  ft . Reports describe this species as dependent on grassy woods made up of Melaleuca , Acacia , Alphitonia and Tristania . They have been seen in area of heavy scrub ground cover, up to 1 m 3.3  ft high in some cases, but ca ...   more details
