Image strip built canoe hull.jpg thumb right Cedar strip canoe hull fabrication in process Strip built is a method of boat building commonly used for canoe s and kayak s, but also suitable for larger boat s. The process involves securing narrow, flexible strips of wood edge to edge around temporary forms. The forms are cut as a series of cross sections of the final design and set up along a strong back or other solid base. Stripping begins at the gunwale and finishes with the football . The strips are edge glued to each other, being held in place with nails or staples to the forms. When the glue has dried, the nails staples are removed and the rough hull ship hull is sanded smooth. It is then covered with a resin epoxy impregnated overlay of fiberglass cloth, which is sanded and finished before removing the hull from the forms. The inside is then smoothed and similarly reinforced before seats, thwarts, and gunwales, are added to complete the boat. This process is similarly suited to building kayaks. The strips are stapled onto a number of chipboard forms, the structures is sanded and fibreglassed, then the forms are removed and the hull is attached. In the 1950s, this process for building canoes was adapted from ship boat building techniques, and refined by a group of Minnesota canoe racers primarily Eugene Jensen, Irwin C. Buzzy Peterson, and Karl Ketter. The Deacy Amp is a small, one watt, roughly convert 5 in cm 1 amplifier created by and named after Queen band Queen bassist John Deacon and used by guitarist Brian May . The amplifier produces a trumpet like or orchestral sound when plugged into a guitar. It was created in the early 1970s using an amplifier found in a Skip container skip by Deacon and a treble booster , constructed by May. Also used was an amplifier circuit board stationed into a High fidelity Hi Fi speaker cabinet , powered by a PP9 battery 9 volt battery . The amp was used along with May s Red Special Red Special guitar and his treble booster. KAT Deacy Amp Replica In 1998, Greg Fryer with the help of UK amp guru Clarify date May 2011 Dave Petersen undertook the job of trying to make 3 copies of the Deacy Amp with May s full backing. These amps produced a similar compressed and saturated sound but lacked the tonal characteristics that were so crucial to the unique Deacy sound. In 2003, Nigel Knight became involved in the amp s development. Several prototype amps were built that were continually edging ever closer to the sound of the original but all fell short of the mark when compared side by side with the real amp. It was only in 2008 when Knight was given permission to take the original Deacy Amp apart and test and analyse each individual component that he finally began to understand the intricate workings. With this new information in hand, Knight called on the vast experience of speaker manufacturers Celestion, who developed and produced nearly 30 prototypes for testing and analysis over a two year period. Custom transformers were produced to exact winding and laminate specs, obsolete components were sourced and made RoHS compliant and bespoke cabinets were constructed at great expense from Sapele veneered chipboard, exactly as the original. In 2010, some 12 years after the project commenced, the Brian May Deacy Amp Replica was given the official approval and blessing of both Brian May and Jo ... more details
Elmdon Heath is an area of Solihull , West Midlands, United Kingdom. It is located to the north of the town centre, at a distance of approximately one mile. It is primarily residential, though there are a few shops, a garage, a community centre a secondary school, a primary school and a church centre. The area is centred around the Damson Lane thoroughfare and the Greville Arms public house. In addition to this there is a further pub at the Red House. Elmdon Heath is on the edge of the West Midlands conurbation and bordered by the Solihull plant Land Rover factory , Solihull town centre, the residential area of Damsonwood and open countryside. The housing was largely constructed between the 1930s and 1950s, though infill development continues apace. Much of the residential land was previously farmland until it was commandeered during World War Two. The former church of St. Francis of Assisi, which was located on Cornyx Lane, closed when the rector was relocated and no substitute was offered. It was vandalised repeatedly, ending in it burning down and has been demolished, the land under residential development. ref http www.solihull.gov.uk akssolihull images att3926.pdf accessed 24 01 09 ref As of April 2009, this development has appeared to be paused, leaving metal containers, chipboard screens and large piles of rubble at the now overgrown site. The Grand Union Canal runs through the area, and Elmdon Heath used to be the site of Solihull Wharf, which is now remembered only in the name of Wharf Lane. A large gasworks waited on Wharf Lane. This was demolished by British Gas and replaced with their national offices. When these were moved to nearby Blythe Valley Park the land became available for development, as a very large new estate of high density housing has been constructed, which has more than doubled the population of the area. Local residents met this with mixed opinion, some believing it was a good use of the land, while some thinking that the estate is an ey ... more details
Aerolite is a urea formaldehyde gap filling adhesive which is water and heat resistant. It is used in large quantities by the chipboard industry and also by wooden boat builders for its high strength and durability. It is also used in joinery , Wood veneer veneer ing and general woodwork assembly. Aerolite has also been used for wooden aircraft construction, and a properly made Aerolite joint is said to be three times stronger than spruce wood. History Dr. Norman de Bruyne Norman A. de Bruyne founded Aero Research Limited in 1934. The following year de Bruyne suggested that synthetic adhesives might play a part in aircraft production and engaged Cambridge University chemist R.E. Clark to investigate new adhesives for aircraft applications. The result was Aerolite, a urea formaldehyde adhesive which unlike conventional glues of the time, resisted water and micro organisms. Further research showed that gap bridging hardeners incorporating formic acid enabled Aerolite to be used as an assembly adhesive. Aerolite was the first adhesive of its type to be invented and manufactured in Britain and used in resin bonded plywood. ref name travis cite book last Travis first A. S. authorlink coauthors Harm G.
