The term Chicano is a political and cultural term of identity specifically identifying people of Mexico Mexican descent who are born in the United States . In the same way that American poetry comprises the writing of the offspring of English and other European colonists to North America, so Chicano poetry and literature comprises the writing of the offspring of Latinos who either emigrated to the United States or were involuntarily included in the country due to the Mexican American War of 1848. Pioneers and forerunners Notable Chicano poets who were instrumental in creating a niche both in American and Latin American literature and developed an impetus were early writers such as Abelardo Lalo Delgado, Trinidad Trino S nchez, Rodolfo Corky Gonzales . Delgado wrote Stupid America , S nchez wrote Why Am I So Brown? and Gonzales authored the epic Yo Soy Joaquin. Another early pioneer writer is the Poet Painter and gypsy vagabond of the national community, Nephtal De Le n, author of Hey, Mr.President, Man , Coca Cola Dream, and Chicano Popcorn. The latter part of the 20th century saw the emergence of Juan Felipe Herrera as a dominant force in the genre. The Royal Chicano Air Force RCAF is a Sacramento, California Sacramento , California based art collective . It was one of the main centers of the Chicano art movement in California during the 1970s and 80s. In 1969, poet and artist Jos Montoya came to Sacramento as a fellowship recipient in the Mexican American Education Project at CSU Sacramento. He was there to undertake a Master s degree program. Along with first year art faculty member, and Jose s compadre from art school, Esteban Villa, they joined with some of the talented Mexican American students to further the aims of the Chicano Movement . The Rebel Chicano Art Front RCAF was founded to foster support for Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers in the heavily agricultural Sacramento Davis, California Davis area. One day when someone asked if the RCAF meant the Royal Canadian Air Force , one of the artists responded, No, it means the Royal Chicano Air Force From that point on, the artists used the Air Force motif in their artworks, programs, and activities. The RCAF began operating out of the Washington Neighborhood Center and frequently held events at Sacramento s Southside Park. To fund their activities and to support the farmworkers, they held dances, performances, and other fundraisers, for which they created promotional posters that visually incorporated the themes of the Chicano Movement . They also received funding from California State University, Sacramento . The RCAF painted murals throughout Sacramento, as well as several in San Diego, California San Diego s Chicano Park and one in Burley, Idaho . Colegio Cesar Chavez, 1973 1983 A Chicano Struggle for Educational Self Determination ISBN 0 815336 31 4 , written by Carlos Maldonado, is the only book length study of Colegio Cesar Chavez . Maldonado was professor of Chicano Education Program at Eastern Washington University . This work began as Maldonado s doctoral dissertation called The Longest Running Death in History which was written at University of Oregon http www.ufw.org page.php?menu research&inc history 08.html . The dissertation was later expanded into the full length book published by Garland Publishers in 2000 . In this work Maldonado claims that due to its geographical location in the Pacific Northwest and the time of its founding, Colegio Cesar Chavez occupies a unique niche in the history of the Chicano Movement . Maldonado writes that the Mexican American community in Oregon and all of the Pacific Northwest is small in comparison to that of other states in the Western United States , making the small farming community of Mount Angel, Oregon an unlikely place for a Chicano institution. Additionally, Maldonado writes that Colegio Cesar Chavez was one of the few educational organizations named after Cesar Chavez during his lifetime. During its decade long existence Colegio Cesar Chavez was the only fully accredited and independent Chicano and Latino college in the United States .
