Steamed cheeseburgers are a regional food particular to very few establishments in Meriden, Connecticut where it was invented in the early 1900s. The steamed cheeseburger is cooked in a stainless steel cabinet which contains small trays that hold either an individual hamburger or a chunk of cheese to be melted. The cheeseburger is served by scooping the meat onto a bun and pouring the melted cheese over the meat. The burger can be served with a number of customary toppings. Years ago, the burger was almost completely sliced in half to fit the buns better and made for a great tasting sandwich. The health inspector decided this was over handling of the product, and no longer allowed this which changed the burger forever. The Meriden Amateur Radio Club refers to the sandwiches as Whizms . The United States American Personal Responsibility in Food Consumption Act , also known as the Cheeseburger Bill , sought to protect producers and retailers of foods&mdash such as McDonalds Corporation McDonald s Corporation &mdash from an increasing number of suits and class action suits by obese consumers. To date these suits have been turned down by the courts, sometimes in strong terms. The Act was passed by the United States House of Representatives U.S. House of Representatives in March 2004, but did not receive a United States Senate Senate vote. The bill was reintroduced in 2005 by Florida United States Republican Party Republican Congressman Ric Keller . Keller had taken the maximum level of Political Action Committee PAC donations up to 300,000 for his personal campaign funding from restaurants including McDonalds, Wendys and Burger King.
