The Vault Keeper was one of three hosts for EC s horror comics known as the GhouLunatics , along with the Tales from the Crypt comic The Crypt Keeper Crypt Keeper and the The Haunt of Fear The Old Witch Old Witch . He served as narrator and was also there to add a lighter touch to the often gruesome stories with puns and humorous commentary. In addition to the appearances in his own book, he also had a guest story in each issue of Tales from the Crypt comic Tales from the Crypt and The Haunt of Fear . He was a ghoul , and unlike the Crypt Keeper or the Old Witch, he has a merrier personality and light hearted approach. However. he and the Crypt Keeper are involved in a love triangle with the Old Witch, and there is much competition between the three, each believing their stories to be better. Although both the Crypt Keeper and the Old Witch received origin stories in Tales from the Crypt 33 and Haunt of Fear 14, respectively, the Vault Keeper s origins were never revealed. Artists Although the Vault Keeper was originally designed by Al Feldstein , Johnny Craig is the artist most associated with the character, having drawn all his lead stories in The Vault of Horror with two exceptions. Craig also drew the Vault Keeper in his guest appearances in the other titles, although another artist frequently drew the rest of the story. For the final four issues of The Vault of Horror , the Vault Keeper was joined by the attractive Drusilla, silent hostess of The Vault of Horror . Yurchenko is the name of both a specific vault gymnastics vault and a vault family in artistic gymnastics . The Yurchenko was named after Soviet gymnast Natalia Yurchenko , who originated the vault in the early 1980s. In a Yurchenko vault, the gymnast does a Roundoff round off onto the Springboard gymnastics springboard and a Handspring Gymnastics Back handspring back handspring onto the horse or vaulting table. The gymnast then performs a somersault salto , which may range in difficulty from a simple single tuck to a triple twist Layout gymnastics layout . Variations Any vault with a roundoff back handspring entry is classified as a Yurchenko style vault in the Code of Points . Many variations of the original vault have been introduced by gymnasts in international competitions. Even in 2006 , gymnasts and coaches continue to develop more difficult versions of the Yurchenko. Some of the most commonly performed Yurchenko style vaults include Backhandspring entry 1 twisting Yurchenko Roundoff, back handspring entry one and a half twisting layout. Abbreviated as 1.5Y. Image Voltacatalana.jpg thumb 240px right An example of Catalan vault in a house in Barcelona The Catalan vault , also called the Catalan turn or Catalan arch or a timbrel vault , is a type of low arch made of plain bricks often used to make a structural floor surface. It is traditionally constructed by laying bricks lengthwise over a wood form or centering , making it a much gentler curve than has generally been produced by other methods of construction. It is a traditional form in Catalonia where it is widely used , and has spread around the world through the work of Catalan architect s such as Gaud Antoni Gaud and Josep Puig i Cadafalch . A study on the stability of the Catalan vault is kept at the archive of the Institute of Catalan Studies, where it is said to have been entrusted by Puig i Cadafalch. Though it is popularly called the Catalan vault, this construction method is found throughout the Mediterranean and the invention of the term Catalan vault occurred in 1904 at an architectural congress in Madrid. The earliest known reference to this vault is from Valencia in 1382.
