Charles Dustin Coffin September 9, 1805 February 28, 1880 was a United States House of Representatives U.S. Representative from Ohio . Born in Newburyport, Massachusetts , Coffin attended the public schools. He moved with his parents to New Lisbon, Ohio . He studied law. He was Admission to the bar in the United States admitted to the bar in September 1823 and commenced practice in New Lisbon. He served as clerk of the courts of Columbiana County in 1828. He was elected as a Whig Party United States Whig to the 25th United States Congress Twenty fifth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Andrew W. Loomis and served from December 20, 1837, to March 3, 1839. He declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1838. He resumed the practice of law and engaged in banking. He served as president of the Columbiana Bank of New Lisbon. He moved to Cincinnati, Ohio , in 1842 and continued the practice of law. Early life and education Born in Boston, Massachusetts , Coffin was descended from numerous long settled elite New England families. He attended the Boston grammar and high schools. Career In 1863 during the American Civil War , Coffin moved to Muirkirk, Maryland , where he took charge of the local ironworks . Coffin engaged in the manufacture of charcoal pig iron , and subsequently became the owner of the Muirkirk blast furnace s. After the war many of its laborers were freedmen , who founded an independent black Queen s Chapel and Burial Ground nearby in 1868. It became the center of an historic black community known as Rossville. Later Coffin went into politics. He was elected as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates from 1884 to 1886, and served in the Maryland State Senate from 1890 to 1894. He was a state delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1892. In 1894 he was elected from the Maryland s 5th congressional district fifth district of Maryland as a Republican Party US to the Fifty third Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Democrat Barnes Compton . They are usually made of a soft metal like lead , pewter , silver , brass , copper or tin . The different metals reflect the different functions of the plates, or the status and wealth of the deceased. For a basic funeral, a simple lead plate would be lettered with the name, date of death and often the age of the departed, and nailed to the lid of a wooden coffin.     About the abolitionist the whaler and discoverer Coffin whaling family Joshua Coffin October 12, 1792 &ndash June 24, 1864 was an American antiquary and abolitionist . Coffin was born in Newbury, Massachusetts . He graduated at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Dartmouth in 1817, and taught school for many years, numbering among his pupils the poet John Greenleaf Whittier , who addressed to him a poem entitled To My Old School Master. Coffin was ardent in the cause of emancipation, and was one of the founders of the New England anti slavery society in 1832, being its first recording secretary. He published The History of Ancient Newbury Boston, 1845 , genealogies of the Woodman, Little, and Toppan families, and magazine articles. As an adult, Coffin lived for a time in the downstairs southwest room of the Coffin House , his ancestral home in a tiny study housed within an ell of the house, Joshua wrote his History of Ancient Newbury .     Oberia Coffin December 1, 1883? &ndash October 18, 2006 was an United States American woman claimed to have been aged Age in years and days 1883 12 1 2006 10 18 at her death, which if true could have made her the world s oldest person, more than six years older than the official titleholder at the time, Elizabeth Bolden , who died aged 116 and 118 days, and even older than Jeanne Calment , the world s validated oldest person ever. No early life documents, however, have been located. Born in Dalby Springs, Texas , Coffin had no birth certificate and no known living relatives. Her social security records, however, listed her as born December 1, 1883.
