  1. Chained dollars

Chained dollars is a method of adjusting real dollar amounts for inflation over time, so as to allow comparison of figures from different years. ref Mark McCracken, http www.teachmefinance.com Scientific Terms Chained dollars.html Definition of Chained dollars TeachMeFinance.com. Accessed 2009.05.11. ref The U.S. Department of Commerce introduced the chained dollar measure in 1996. Chained dollars generally reflect dollar figures computed with 2005 as the base year. The difference between chained dollars and the previous measure, constant dollars, is that while the latter is weighted by a constant basket of goods and services, chained dollars are weighted by a basket that changes from year to year so as to more accurately reflect spending. The basket is an average of the basket for successive pairs of years. The technique is so named because the second number in a pair of successive years becomes the first in the next pair. The result is a chain of weights and averages. ref U.S. Department of Energy, http www.eia.doe.gov emeu consumptionbriefs recs natgas chained.html Chained Dollars , citing EIA, Annual Energy Review 1999 . ref The advantage of using the chained dollar measure is that it is more closely related to any given period covered and is therefore subject to less distortion over time. ref Mark McCracken, op. cit. ref See also Inflation adjustment Constant dollars References references External links http www.bea.gov national nipaweb TableView.asp?SelectedTable 253&FirstYear 2006&LastYear 2008&Freq Qtr Selected Per Capita Product and Income Series in Current and Chained Dollars U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis economics stub Category Money ...   more details

Image Chain.jpg thumb 250px right Chained Oak The Chained Oak is the local legend of Alton, Staffordshire Alton Village in Staffordshire , England . Legend The legend goes that on an autumn night in 1821, the Earl of Shrewsbury was returning to his home in Alton Towers when an old woman suddenly appeared in the road. The coach stopped to find why she was there, and then the old woman begged for a coin. The Earl cruelly dismissed her, so the old woman placed a curse on him. The old woman said, For every branch on the Old Oak Tree here that falls, a member of the Earl s family will die. The Earl dismissed this and carried on his way. That night, during a violent storm a single branch from the old oak tree broke and fell. Later that same night, a member of the Earl s family suddenly and mysteriously died. Andromeda represents Rembrandt s first full length mythological female nude history painting and is taken from a story in Ovid s Metamorphoses . This story is about an Ethiopian princess who, as punishment for her mother s boasting, was chained to a rock to be sacrificed to a sea monster that was tormenting the Ethiopian people. ref name Ovid, book iv, myth ix Ovid, book iv, myth ix. ref Many artists such as Titian have depicted this story by showing Andromeda mythology Andromeda , her rescuer Perseus , and the sea monster all in the same composition. In this work, Rembrandt shies away from classical conventions by showing her not as a glamorous beauty but as a frightened naturalistic looking girl. No other figure is included, but her alarmed look out of the picture space to the right creates narrative tension. The painting is an example of Rembrandt s rejection of idealized beauty. Since he did not believe true beauty existed naturally, he painted women as he saw them naturally imperfect and flawed. ref name Clark, p. 11 Clark, p. 11. ref Rembrandt s subsequent nude mythological paintings from this period Diana Bathing and Dana Rembrandt painting Dana show his evolving portrayal of the nude. 1. Chained volume series

Cleanup date November 2009 A Chained volume series is a series of economic data such as Gross Domestic Product GDP , Gross National Product GNP or similar kinds of data from successive years, put in real or constant, ie., inflation and deflation adjusted terms by computing the production volume for each year in the prices of the preceding year, and then chain linking the data together to obtain a time series of production figures from which the effects of price changes ie., monetary inflation or deflation have, at least in theory, been removed. In other words, from the raw GDP or GNP data, which reflect changes in both production volume and prices, a series is obtained which reflects only production volume. The year by year chain linking method differs from some other techniques for compensating for monetary inflation and deflation that are used in economics, such as the Consumer price index . The consumer price index uses the observed price of a set market basket of goods and services in any two given years to determine the relative prices in those two years it does not rely on a cumulative accounting of changes in the intervening years. The consumer price index is thus an example of a fixed weight compensation method fixed weight methods relate prices in all years to some single base year. The problem is that the compensation factor derived from any index depends on the weights given to the various items in the market basket &mdash or the proportions of each item in whatever aggregate amount is being looked at &mdash and the weights that were correct for one time may not be correct for other times. For example, in 1850 the price of horse fodder would have been an important component of overall price levels, but now it is not. If one is comparing 1850 price levels to present ... 1. Francis Trigge Chained Library

Francis Trigge Chained Library is a library in Grantham , Lincolnshire , England which was founded in 1598. In 1598 Francis Trigge, Rector of Welbourne in Lincolnshire, arranged for a library to be set up in the room over the South Porch of St. Wulfram s Church, Grantham for the use of the clergy and the inhabitants of the town and Soke legal Soke . The borough was responsible for furnishing the porchroom and Trigge undertook to supply books to the value of one hundred poundes or thereaboutes . The two vicars of North and South Grantham, together with the master of the local grammar school now The King s School, Grantham were to control the use of the library, and took an oath to abide by the rules. The original documents still exist and are deposited within the Lincolnshire Archives . The library was the first in England to be endowed for use outside an institution such as a school or college. It is perhaps slightly misleading to call it the first public library but nevertheless its use was not the prerogative of a private group. The library has always been in the parvise over the south porch, originally the dwelling chamber of one of the vicars, with a fireplace, a small sink and an oriel window that commands a view of the nave of the church. A list of books made up in 1608 and still extant contains 228 titles, but some of these prove to be works bound together. There are now 356 separate items catalogued. Some of these have been added over the years, including the works of the Cambridge Platonist and Cartesian Henry More , given by him during the 17th century. He was a native of Grantham and attended The King s School, Grantham The King s School where, some forty years later, Isaac Newton was a pupil. 1. Conway chained arrow notation

Conway chained arrow notation , created by mathematician John Horton Conway , is a means of expressing certain extremely large numbers . It is simply a finite sequence of positive integers separated by rightward arrows, e.g. 2    3    4    5    6. As with most combinatorial symbologies, the definition is recursion recursive . In this case the notation eventually resolves to being the leftmost number raised to some usually enormous integer power. Definition and overview A Conway chain or chain for short is defined as follows Any positive integer is a chain of length 1. A chain of length n , followed by a right arrow and a positive integer, together form a chain of length math n 1 math . Any chain represents an integer, according to the four rules below. Two chains are said to be equivalent if they represent the same integer. If p and q are positive integers, and X is a subchain, then The chain math p math represents the number p . math p to q math represents the exponentiation exponential expression math p q math . math X to p to 1 math is equivalent to math X to p math . math X to p to q 1 math is equivalent to math X to X to cdots X to X to q cdots to q to q math br with p copies of X , p   &minus   1 copies of q , and p   &minus   1 pairs of parentheses applies for q     0 .
