  1. Chaconne (Nielsen)

Carl Nielsen s Chaconne , Op. 32, is among the composer s most frequently played compositions for piano. Background In a letter to his daughter Irmelin dated 19 December 1916, Nielsen, who was spending Christmas alone because of difficulties in his marriage with Anne Marie Carl Nielsen Anne Marie , wrote that he was composing a large Chaconne for piano . You probably know, he explained, that the passacaglia and chaconne forms are more or less the same a fundamental theme or bass that is varied in numerous ways. He hoped with his work for the piano would emulate Johann Sebastian Bach Bach s beautiful Partita for Violin No. 2 Bach Chaconne for solo violin . Variations, Chaconne and Finale is a set of variation form variations ref David Ewen, Encyclopedia of Concert Music . New York Hill and Wang, 1959. ref for orchestra composed by Norman Dello Joio in 1947 the piece was premiered in Pittsburgh , under the direction of Fritz Reiner , on January 30, 1948. It won the New York Critics Circle Award for the year. It is an orchestral version of his Piano Sonata No. 1. The theme for the piece, presented by the oboe , is derived from the Kyrie movement of the Missa de Angelis , and much of the work is subdued and religious in tone. In the first part of the piece, after its initial presentation, the melody is the subject of six variations. The chaconne is built from its first four notes, but in chromatic form. The finale, by contrast to the rest of the work, is spirited and joyous. The work ends with a loud return of the theme s first four notes. The Almira transcription is noted by critics as one of the most striking of Liszt s late concert arrangements as well as his only setting of a baroque piece from Late works Liszt his late period . Liszt s decision to set Handel was probably due at least in part to please British audiences, for whom Handel was still the preeminent national composer and before whom Bache would likely appear. ref name baker103 Baker, 103. ref Nevertheless, the choice of subject matter was surprising, not only by being Handel instead of Johann Sebastian Bach Bach but also from being taken from a Handel opera which was virtually ignored at the time. ref name how7 Howard, 7. ref In his most recent baroque transcription prior to Almira , that of Bach s Great Fantasia and Fugue in G minor, BWV 542 Fantasie and Fugue in G Minor BWV 542 dating from 1867, Liszt follows the original almost exactly. 1. Musicalische Ergötzung

Musicalische Erg tzung English Musical Delight , List of compositions by Johann Pachelbel PWC 370a&ndash 375, T. 331&ndash 336, PC 348&ndash 353 is a collection of chamber music by Johann Pachelbel . Published during his lifetime, it contains six suite s for two violin s and basso continuo . The exact circumstances of the German language German titled work s publication are unknown. The only extant copy of the original print was published in or after 1699 in Nuremberg , by Johann Christoph Weigel, a publisher who also issued several other works by Pachelbel. Yet Johann Mattheson , writing some decades after Pachelbel s death, claimed that Musicalische Erg tzung was first published in 1691. The collection contains six parties , or suites Partie I in F major Sonata Allegro &ndash Allemande &ndash Courante &ndash Ballet &ndash Sarabande &ndash Gigue Partie II in C minor Sonata &ndash Gavotte &ndash Trezza &ndash Aria &ndash Sarabande &ndash Gigue Partie III in E flat major Sonata Allegro &ndash Allemande &ndash Courante &ndash Gavotte &ndash Sarabande &ndash Gigue Partie IV in E minor Sonata Adagio &ndash Aria &ndash Courante &ndash Aria &ndash Chaconne Partie V in C major Sonata &ndash Aria &ndash Trezza &ndash Chaconne Partie VI in B flat major Sonata Adagio &ndash Aria &ndash Courante &ndash Gavotte &ndash Sarabande &ndash Gigue It is worth noting that these are not the exact titles in the original published edition but normalized into a more modern international terminology. For example, in the original German edition, Chaconne was spelled Ciacona , Gigue as Gigg , Courante as Courant , etc. The technique of scordatura alternative tuning used for the open strings is applied to the violin parts of all suites, but, unlike contemporary composers such as Heinrich Ignaz Biber , Pachelbel used it sparingly, not to produce special effects but to teach the amateur performers for whom the work was probably intended the basics of this technique. 1. Precompositional

In music , precompositional decisions are those decisions which a composer decides upon before or while beginning to create a musical composition composition . These limits may be given to the composer, such as the length or style needed, or entirely decided by the composer. Precompositional decisions may also include which key music key , scale music scale , musical form , style, music genre genre , or idiom in which to write, to use techniques such as the twelve tone technique , serialism , or not to consciously use a system at all. Other examples may include isorhythm , ostinato , passacaglia , chaconne , rhythm s, or chord progression . Precompositional decisions do not necessarily, and almost always do not, preclude compositional decisions, and may actually allow the initial consideration of the choices to be made. One might say that, thus, while it liberates imagination as to what the world may be, it refuses to legislate as to what the world is Bertrand Russell , Our Knowledge of the External World . Thus precompositional decisions do not necessarily ease the compositional choices. On the other hand the concept of precompositional decisions is unclear as it is often impossible to determine which decisions occur before or during a composition. 1. Sonnerie de Ste-Genevičve du Mont-de-Paris

unreferenced date November 2006 Sonnerie de Ste Genevi ve du Mont de Paris , The Bells of St. Genevieve in English, is a work by Marin Marais written in 1723 for viol , violin and harpsichord with Figured bass basso continuo . It can be considered a passacaglia or a chaconne , with a repeating D, F, E bass line. Being a student of Monsieur de Sainte Colombe , it is perhaps Marais most famous composition that explores the various techniques of the viol. The work begins with 4 measures of the bass line played by the continuo and viol, then, on the 5th measure the violin takes over the melody. Throughout the piece, the violin and viol take turns with the melody. The viol part is of great difficulty because of Marais s mastery of that instrument. The centerpiece is not the melody, the violin, but the viol. His work can be thought of as something to showcase the violist s skill, despite that it does not always have the melody. The piece also exists in a version for solo double bass, having been arranged by Norman Ludwin for Ludwin Music. Category 1723 compositions Classical composition stub ...   more details
