  1. Cephissus (Boeotia)

es Cefiso Beocia fr C phise B otie la Cephissus Boeotia nl Boeotische Cephisus nn ...Unreferenced date December 2009 The northern Cephissus river Greek Kifiss s , Kephiss s , or K phissos or Cephisus Greek K phisos rises at Lilaea in Phocis and flows by Delphi through Boeotia and eventually issues into Lake Copais which is therefore also called the Cephisian Lake. This Cephissus is the modern Mauro Potamo. Pausanias geographer Pausanias 9.38.7 records a Thebes, Greece Theban tradition that the river Cephissus formerly flowed under the a mountain and entered the sea until Heracles blocked the passage and diverted the water into the Orchomenus Boeotia Orchomenian plain but he does not believe it. Pausanias 10.8.1 also says that the Lilaeans on certain days threw cakes and other customary items into the spring of the Cephissus and that they would reappear in the spring of Castalia . The same author names as daughters of this Cephissus the naiad Lilaea 10.33.4 the eponym of Lilaea at its source, Daulis 10.4.7 the eponym of the city of Daulis, Melaeno 10.6.4 mother of Delphus by Apollo , though he also gives two other accounts of Delphus mother. However one of these alternate versions is that Thyia daughter of the aboriginal Castalius was Delphus mother, almost certainly the same Thyia whom Herodotus 7.178.1 claims was daughter of Cephissus to whom the Delphians built an altar to the winds and who was eponym of the Thyiades . A mortal son of Cephissus was Eteocles son of Andreus Eteocles by Euippe daughter of Leucon son of Athamas . This Euippe was wife of King Andreus of Orchomenus Boeotia Orchomenus and Eteocles inherited Andreus throne 9.34.9 . Eteocles or Eteoclus son of Cephissus is confirmed from Hesiod s Catalogue Fr. 70 and Pindar Ol. 14 . He first made offering to the Charites by the side of the river Cephissus. 1. Eunostus (hero)

for the goddess of the mill Eunostus In Greek mythology , Eunostus was a hero of Tanagra , Boeotia . His parents were Elieus, son of Cephissus Boeotia Cephissus , and Scias. He was said to have received his name from the nymph Eunosta who reared him. The story of Eunostus death, related by Plutarch with a reference to the poetess Myrtis of Anthedon, is as follows. Ochne, a daughter of Colonus and cousin of Eunostus, fell in love with him, but he rejected her advances and was going to report the matter to her brothers, Echemus, Leon and Bucolus. She forestalled him by telling her brothers that Eunostus had taken her by force they laid an ambush against Eunostus and killed him. Elieus seized the murderers of his son and put them in bonds. Then Ochne, overcome with remorse, confessed to Elieus that her accusations were false. Colonus, who judged the matter, sent his sons into exile, and Ochne committed suicide by throwing herself off a height. Plutarch further relates that there was a sanctuary of Eunostus in Tanagra, and that women were not allowed to enter the precinct, not even in emergency cases like earthquakes. Image Boeotia ancient.png thumb 350px right Map of ancient Boeotia. Ocalea Greek language Greek polytonic , kalea , rarely polytonic later polytonic was a town in antiquity in Boeotia , Greece , on the south shore of Lake Copais . Ocalea lay roughly halfway between Alalcomenae and Aliartos ancient Haliartus , about 30 Ancient Greek weights and measures stadia 5.5 km from each. ref Strabo , 9.2.26 9.2.27. ref Ancient sources often mention it alongside Mantinea and Medeon, which suggests that they were close by. ref E.g. Homer Iliad 2.501 Dionysius of Byzantium , Description of Greece 99. ref The short distance between Mantinea and Ocalea seems to be the reason why the mythical figure Agla a, daughter of Mantineus, was sometimes also known as Ocalea . Origins Most sources that discuss the origin of the town s name explain it as coming from the Greek language Greek adjective polytonic , quick . The early D scholia on the Iliad explain this as a reference to an unnamed river flowing past it the geographical writer Stephanus of Byzantium explains it as a reference to the brief journey from the nearby town Thespies to Thebes, Greece Thebes . ref Schol. D on Iliad 2.501 Stephanus 706 s.v. polytonic . Herodian De prosodia catholica iii.1 p. 284 gives both explanations. Stephanus and Herodian seem to be under the mistaken impression that Ocalea lay on the route from Thespies to Thebes but Thespies is some way from where the lake was. ref Mythology The Homeric Hymns Hymn to Apollo narrates how the god Apollo , in his search for a place to establish his oracle , passes by Ocalea and Haliartus after crossing the river Cephissus Boeotia Cephissus on his way to Telphousa.
