  1. Mystagogue

A mystagogue from lang el person who initiates into mysteries is a person who initiates others into mysticism mystic beliefs, an educator or person who has knowledge of the Sacred Mysteries . Another word is Hierophant . In ancient mystery religion s, a mystagogue would be responsible for leading an initiate into the secret teachings and rituals of the cultus . The initiate would often be blindfolded, and the mystagogue would literally guide him into the sacred space. In the early church , this same concept was used to describe the bishop , who was responsible for seeing to it that the catechumens were properly prepared for baptism . Homilies given to those in the last stages of preparation, and which deal with the Sacraments are called Mystagogical Homilies. Sometimes these mystagogical instructions were not given until after the catechumen had been baptized. The most famous of these mystagogical works are the Mystagogical Homilies of St. Cyril of Jerusalem and the work, On the Mysteries by St. Ambrose of Milan . In various organizations, it is the role of the mystagogue to mystify pledges. The term is sometimes used to refer to a person who guides people through religious sites, such as churches, and explains the various artifacts. This branch of theology is at times called mystagogy. Max Weber , considered to be one of the founders of the modern study of sociology , described the mystagogue as part magician, part prophet and as one who dispersed magical actions that contain the boons of salvation ref Kirkpatrick, R. George and Diana Tumminia California Space Goddess The Mystagogue in a Flying Saucer Cult , In Twentieth Century World Religious Movements in Neo Weberian Perspective , 1992, 300 ref According to Roy Wallis, The primary criterion that Weber had in mind in distinguishing the prophet from the mystagogue was that the latter offers a largely magical means of salvation rather than proclaiming a radical religious ethic or an example to be followe ...   more details

  1. Scrutiny

about the journal Scrutiny journal the U.S. legal concept Strict scrutiny and Intermediate scrutiny Unreferenced date January 2011 Notability date January 2011 Scrutiny French scrutin Late Latin scrutinium from scrutari , meaning those who search through piles of rubbish in the hope of finding something of value, and originally from the Latin scruta, meaning broken things, rags, or rubbish. . In Roman times, the scrutari of cities and towns were those who laboriously searched for valuables amidst the waste and cast offs of others. The modern English scrutiny is derived from this root, indicating a careful examination or inquiry often implying the search for a hidden mistake, misstatement, or incongruity . The word is specifically applied in the early Roman Catholic Church to the examination of the catechumen s or those under instruction in the faith. They were taught the creed and the Lord s Prayer , examined therein, and exorcism exorcized prior to baptism . The days of scrutiny varied at different periods from three to seven. From about the end of the 12th century, when it became usual to baptize infants soon after their birth instead of at stated times Easter and Pentecost , the ceremony of scrutiny was incorporated with that of the actual baptism. Scrutiny is also a term applied to a method of electing a pope in the Catholic Church , in contradistinction to two other methods, acclamation and accession. In the law of elections, scrutiny is the careful examination of votes cast after the unsuccessful candidate has lodged a petition claiming the seat, and alleging that he has the majority of legal votes. Each vote is dealt with separately, notice being given beforehand by one party to the other of the votes objected to and the grounds of objection. 1911 Category Baptism Category Christian liturgy, rites, and worship services RC stub sk Skrut nium ...   more details

Benjamin Fawcett 1715 1780 was an English dissenting minister . Life Fawcett was born at Sleaford, Lincolnshire , on 16 August 1715, the youngest of ten children. He entered Philip Doddridge s dissenting academy at Northampton in 1738. In March 1741 Doddridge sent him to Whitchurch and Chester to collect evidence for an alibi in the case of Bryan Connell, then under sentence of death for murder executed 3 April . In the same year Fawcett became minister of Paul s Meeting, Taunton , where he was ordained on 16 June 1742, forty ministers being present. Doddridge went down to take part in the ordination, and was presented to Fawcett s future wife. In 1745 Fawcett moved to Kidderminster . Here Doddridge visited him in 1747, and found his ministry prospering he had 316 catechumen s. He seems to have retained his popularity to the close of his life. In July 1780 Fawcett was prostrated by illness the disease was supposed to be the stone , but was in reality an ulcer . He died in October. His funeral sermon was preached on 18 October by Thomas Tayler of Carter Lane. On his death his congregation divided, the Independents retaining the meeting house, and an Arian secession building a new place of worship. Works For the use of his congregations he published abridgments of many of Richard Baxter s writings, and edited other religious works. Between 1756 and 1774 Fawcett published many sermons, the first being The Grand Enquiry, &c., 1756. His major pieces were Candid Reflections on the different manner in which the learned and pious have expressed their conceptions concerning the doctrine of the Trinity, &c., Shrewsbury, 1777 second edition, enlarged, Shrewsbury, 1778 an appendix to the second edition, Shrewsbury, 1780.
