The catacombs of London are a series of subterranean spaces in London , United Kingdom . The city s high water table limits subterreanean construction. There has been a long tradition of burial under the floors of churches, and during the period of new church building during the Victorian era many were given vaults or crypts under the main structure. There are several purpose built crypts catacombs, including those of the West Norwood Cemetery , which has a remarkable collection of historic monuments on a landscaped hill. The catacombs, opened in 1837, were built below chapels and included a group of 95 vaults with private and shared Loculus architecture loculi with a capacity of 3500 coffins. Another large underground catacomb was built at Kensal Green Cemetery and a smaller one at Nunhead Cemetery . Several other cemeteries were given above ground burial structures which they described as catacombs, including Brompton Cemetery and Highgate Cemetery . File Znojmo The Underground Passages 1.jpg thumb The underground passages of Znojmo The Znojmo Catacombs are a vast labyrinth of underground passageways, cellars and basement subcellars situated under the historic city of Znojmo , in the Czech Republic . They were initially developed for defensive purposes. Development of the cellars These grotto s date back to the 14th century, and were gradually expanded into the 15th century by connecting the individual cellars beneath the houses and palaces in the city into an elaborate labyrinth. Uses of the cellars The catacombs were initially created to protect the inhabitants of the city against invading forces. In some places the passageways led under the fortifications and out of the city, allowing the hidden inhabitants to escape from the town to search for food in times of siege. The subterranean caverns were adequately ventilated by air shafts. Fireplaces in the cellars were connected to house chimneys. Smoke could be seen by enemies, emanating from seemingly empty houses, making the town resemble a ghost town. Znojmo inhabitants could survive for a long time in refuge due to the presence of wells and a drainage system in the catacombs. If enemies happened to find entrance to the cellars they would have to consider several defensive measures including slippery slides which would drop the invader into deep wells that could not be scaled as well as trapdoors and narrow passageways. Later the cellars were used for storage, especially the storage of wine. Author Alan Lance Andersen created Elfland Catacombs as a children s fantasy adventure, using the Commodore BASIC computer language. The plot involved the reader visiting an aunt in the border country of Scotland and becoming lost after crossing into Elfland with the help of an elf named Jennings. Numerous plot paths led to different endings some happy and others not quite so pleasant. Unlike the many computer game style adventures of the period, this was a true electronic storybook with hypertextual links. Paul Jordan Hollander later converted it from the obsolete Commodore Basic into HTML files. The Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa meaning Mound of shards or Potsherds is a historical archaeological site located in Alexandria , Egypt and is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World Wonders of the Medieval World Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages . The necropolis consists of a series of Alexandrian tombs, statues and archaeological objects of the Pharaonic funeral cult with Hellenistic and early Imperial Roman influences. Due to the time period, many of the features of the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa merge Roman, Greek and Egyptian cultural points some statues are Egyptian in style, yet bear Roman clothes and hair style whilst other features share a similar style. A circular staircase, which was often used to transport deceased bodies down the middle of it, leads down into the tombs that were tunneled into the bedrock during the age of the Antonine emperors 2nd century AD . The facility was then used as a burial chamber from the 2nd century to the 4th century, before being rediscovered in 1900 when a donkey accidentally fell into the access shaft. To date, three sarcophagus sarcophagi have been found, along with other human and animal remains which were added later. It is believed that the catacombs were only intended for a single family, but it is unclear why the site was expanded in order to house numerous other individuals. The Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa is, according to some lists, also one of the seven medieval wonders of the world . One of the more gruesome features of the catacombs is the so called Hall of Caracalla.
