Image Forslund, Linnaeus filius.jpg right framed Portrait by Jonas Forsslund Carl Linnaeus the Younger , Carl von Linn or CarolusLinnaeus the Younger 20 January 1741 &ndash 1 November 1783 was a Sweden Swedish natural history naturalist . He is known as Linnaeus filius abbreviated to L.f. as a botanical authority to distinguish him from his famous father, the systematist Carl Linnaeus . He was enrolled at the University of Uppsala at the age of nine and was taught science by his father s students, including Pehr L fling , Daniel Solander and Johann Peter Falck . In 1763, aged just 22, he succeeded his father as the head of Practical Medicine at Uppsala. His promotion to professor &mdash without taking exams or defending a thesis &mdash caused resentment among his colleagues. Linnaeus work was modest in comparison to that of his father. His best known work is the Supplementum Plantarum Supplementum Plantarum systematis vegetabilium of 1781, which contains botanical descriptions by the elder Linnaeus and his colleagues, edited and with additions by the son. He inherited his father s extensive scientific collections and correspondence and worked to preserve them. When he died childless on 1 November 1783 of jaundice contracted on a visit to London his mother sold the collections to the English botanist Sir James Edward Smith , who left them to the Linnean Society of London . botanist L.f. File Carlo Sigonio by Follower of Bartolomeo Passerotti.jpg thumb Carlo Sigonio Carolus Sigonius Carlo Sigonio or Sigone c. 1524 1584 was an Italy Italian Humanism humanist , born in Modena . Having studied Greek language Greek under the learned Franciscus Portus of Heraklion Candia , he attended the philosophical schools of university of Bologna Bologna and university of Pavia Pavia , and in 1545 was elected professor of Greek in his native place in succession to Portus. In 1552 he was appointed to a professorship at Venice , which he exchanged for the chair of eloquence at Padua in 1560. To this period of his life belongs the famous quarrel with Robertelli , due to the publication by Sigonius of a treatise De nominibus Romanorum , in which he corrected several errors in a work of Robertelli on the same subject. The quarrel was patched up by the intervention of Cardinal Seripando who purposely stopped on his way to the Council of Trent , but broke out again in 1562, when the two rivals found themselves colleagues at Padua. Sigonius, who was of a peaceful disposition, thereupon accepted in 1563 a call to Bologna. He died in a country house purchased by him in the neighbourhood of Modena, in August 1584. The last year of his life was embittered by another literary dispute. In 1583 there was published at Venice what purported to be Cicero s Consolatio , written as a distraction from his grief at the death of his daughter Tullia. Sigonius declared that, if not genuine, it was at least worthy of Cicero those who held the opposite view Antonio Riccoboni , Justus Lipsius , and others asserted that Sigonius himself had written it with the object of deceiving the learned world, a charge which he explicitly denied.
