The notion of institution has been created by Joseph Goguen and Rod Burstall in the late 1970s in order to deal with the population explosion among the logical system s used in computer science . The notion tries to capture the essence of the concept of logical system . With this, it is possible to develop concepts of specification language s like structuring of specifications, parameterization, implementation, refinement, development , proof calculi and even tool s in a way completely independent of the underlying logical system. There are also morphism s that allow to relate and translate logical systems. Important applications of this are re use of logical structure also called borrowing , heterogeneous specification and combination of logics. Recently, institutional model theory has generalized many notions and deep results of model theory . Definition The theory of institutions does not assume anything about the nature of the logical system. That is, Interpretation logic model s and Sentence mathematical logic sentences may be arbitrary objects the only assumption being that there is a satisfaction relation between models and sentences, telling whether a sentence holds in a model or not. Unreferenced date January 2007 In embryology , Carnegie stages are a standardized system of 23 stages used to provide a unified developmental chronology of the vertebrate embryo . The stages are delineated through the development of structures, not by size or the number of days of development, and so the chronology can vary between species, and to a certain extent between embryos. It only covers the first 60 days of development at that point the term embryo is usually replaced with the term fetus . It was based on work by Streeter 1942 and O Rahilly and M ller 1987 . The name Carnegie stages comes from the CarnegieInstitution for ScienceCarnegieInstitution of Washington . While the Carnegie stages provide a universal system for staging and comparing the embryonic development of most vertebrates, other systems are occasionally used for the common model organism s in developmental biology , such as the Hamburger Hamilton stages in the chicken chick . It was established in 1816 by Charles Orpen Dr. Charles Orpen . History During his work at the Workhouse of the House of Industry in Dublin in 1816, Dr. Orpen found at least twenty one deaf children. He selected a deaf and dumb boy, Thomas Collins, for tuition. After devoting his leisure hours, for a few months, to the partial education of the boy at his own house, Dr. Orpen gave a few popular lectures at the Rotunda, in which he brought forward the most striking features in the condition of the deaf and dumb, and the principal facts with respect to the history of their education, as a science recently invented, and the establishment of schools in various countries for their relief. Collins progress in written language, in calculation, and in articulate speech, after only a few months instruction, was so satisfactory that the cause of the deaf and dumb was immediately taken up by the public.
