Antonio da Fonseca Soares Antonio das Chagas 25 June 1631 &ndash 20 October 1682 was a Portuguese Franciscan and ascetical writer. Life Chagas was born at Vidigueira . Having entered the Portuguese army as a common soldier, he was forced to flee to Bahia in Brazil , as the result of a duel. There he led a dissolute life, but was converted through the writings of Louis of Granada . Having returned to Portugal, he continued to lead his former life of dissipation, until in 1662 he was taken with a grievous illness. On his recovery he hastened to fulfil his promise, and was admitted into the Franciscan Order in May of the same year, receiving in religion the name of Antonio das Chagas. He died at Torres Vedras , leaving a great part of his writings still unpublished. Diogo das Chagas c.1584 Santa Cruz das Flores &mdash c.1661 Angra do Hero smo was a Franciscan monk and Azores Azorean historian , author of Espelho Cristalino , an important resource on the colonization of the islands of the central and western groups of the Portuguese people Portuguese Azores , after 1640. Biography He was the son of Mateus Coelho da Costa, Captain major of the island of Flores Island Azores Flores , and his wife, D. Catarina de Fraga Rodovalho. Little is known of his infancy and childhood Chagas wrote that his first studies occurred in the city of Angra do Hero smo Angra , where he received ecclesiastical training, but, owing for the absence of a bishop in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Angra Diocese de Angra , he travelled to Lisbon in 1612, in order to be ordained priest. He returned in 1614, and began studying Art at the Society of Jesus Col gio da Companhia de Jesus in Angra. In 1616, he registered in Theology at the University of Coimbra . He completed his studies in 1620, and returned to the Azores and taught Theology at the Convent of S o Francisco in Angra. He became guardian of the Convent of S o Francisco in Praia da Vitoria Praia in 1627 and church orator in 1629 . Along with his brother, Friar Mateus da Concei o, he was responsible for convincing the Franciscan hierarchy to de annex the Azores from the Prov ncia Franciscana dos Algarves en Franciscan Province of the Algarves , to a wholly local Prov ncia Franciscana de S o Jo o Evangelista dos A ores en Franciscan Province of Saint John the Baptist of the Azores administration, in 1638.
