The colonial chapel of the Trinity is notable because it is where the parents and wife of Sim n Bol var are buried. History The construction of the cathedral was begun in 1666 by Juan de Medina , to replace a small Church building church that was destroyed in the earthquake of 1641 . Construction was completed in 1674. The facade , dating from 1771 , is the work of Francisco Andr s de Meneses . After the 1812 Caracas earthquake earthquake of 1812 , one of its towers was damaged and later reduced in size. A frontispiece was constructed in the facade in 1866. In 1932 and during the 1960s restoration and modifications were made throughout the building. Architecture and interior The cathedral has a romanesque plan consisting of five nave s a central one and two minor ones on each side. The building hosts two theatre auditoriums, a concert hall, a library, a gallery, a cinema, rehearsal rooms, a caf , as well as numerous offices. The institution was founded on August 8, 1931. The Caracas Athenaeum has always been led by women. The current president, Mar a Teresa Castillo , has been in that position since 1958. The first president was the musician Maria Luisa Escobar . She led the Atheneum from its first headquarters, a residence property of general Vicencio P rez Soto. In 1942, there was a change of both, president and location. The presidency went to the hands of the actress Anna Julia Rojas. The new location was the place of birth of educator Andr s Bello . It would not be until 1983 that the Caracas Athenaeum would obtain its current location. In 1995, the president of the LDS Church, Gordon B. Hinckley , announced plans to construct a Mormon temple in Venezuela . Immediately following that announcement, a search was conducted to find a suitable site on which to build. Several properties were considered over the next eighteen months but none was chosen.
