He celebrated by engaging Mr W A Clements, a stonemason from Exeter, to engrave granite stones in situ on Buckland Beacon with the Ten Commandments. He started work on 15 December 1927 and completed the job on 14 June 1928. Whilst engraving the stones he lived in a cow shed on the site and was supplied each week with a loaf of bread by Mr Whitley. In later years Mr Clements said, Day after day I was on my knees chipping away and I wondered if the originator of the Commandments suffered from an aching back and sore knees as I did . Buckland, then known as Bocheland, was one of the three settlements on Portsea Island mentioned in the Domesday Book . The Manor of Bocheland was purchased by Jean de Gisors . De Gisors, a Normans Norman lord who then founded Portsmouth on land at the southern end of the manor, in 1180. The area was extensively bombed during the World War II Second World War . Due to this, and the slum nature of much of what housing was left, large parts were demolished and replaced with social housing built in the 1950s and 60s. Charles Dickens was born in Buckland in 1812. His father moved to Portsmouth to work at the Naval Base. Image Buckland Abbey.jpg right thumb Buckland Abbey Buckland Abbey is a 700 year old house in Buckland Monachorum , near Yelverton, Devon Yelverton , Devon , England , noted for its connection with Sir Francis Drake and presently in the ownership of the National Trust for Places of Historic Interest or Natural Beauty National Trust . History Buckland was originally a Cistercians Cistercian abbey founded in 1278 by Amicia, Countess of Devon and was a daughter house of Quarr Abbey , on the Isle of Wight . It remained an abbey until the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII of England King Henry VIII . In 1541 Henry sold Buckland to Sir Richard Grenville who, working with his son Roger, began to convert the abbey into a residence. Roger died in 1545, leaving a son, also named Richard Grenville , who completed the conversion. He eventually sold Buckland to Drake in 1581. The abbey is unusual in that the church was retained as the principal component of the new house whilst most of the remainder was demolished, which was a reversal of the normal outcome with this type of redevelopment. Drake lived in the house for 15 years, as did many of his collateral descendants until 1946, when it was sold to a local landowner, Arthur Rodd, who presented the property to the National Trust in 1948. Buckland today The property has been open to the public since 1951.
