Refimprove date February 2011 The anterior pituitary secretes a number of hormones including Growth hormone GH Prolactin PRL Thyroid stimulating hormone TSH Adrenocorticotropic hormone ACTH Melanocyte stimulating hormone MSH not produced in humans ref Brook, Charles. Essential Endocrinology . 4th Ed. Blackwell Publishing, 2001, p. 38. ref Follicle stimulating hormone FSH Luteinizing hormone LH Although theoretically a tumour could secrete any of these hormones, the common tumours secrete growth hormone see acromegaly , prolactin see prolactinoma and hyperprolactinaemia , mixed secretions or no secretion at all. Once tumours were categorised by their light microscopic appearance but now tumours are more reliably categorised by immunoperoxidase studies. Blood tests for the hormones are important diagnostic tools. An antiparkinson , or antiparkinsonian , is a type of drug which is intended to therapy treat and relieve the symptom s of Parkinson s disease PD or Parkinsonism . Most of these agents act by either increasing dopamine activity or reducing acetylcholine activity in the central nervous system CNS . Examples L DOPA Levodopa & Carbidopa L DOPA enters the brain and is converted into dopamine Carbidopa prevents the peripheral synthesis of dopamine from L DOPA to prevent undesirable sympathomimetic side effects. Selegiline , Rasagiline prevent the metabolism of dopamine by MAO B MAO sub B sub and hence increase its brain levels. Entacapone , Tolcapone prevent the metabolism of dopamine by Catechol O methyl transferase COMT and hence increase its brain levels. Apomorphine , Bromocriptine , Pramipexole , Ropinirole , Rotigotine dopamine receptor agonists which directly increase the activity of the dopamine system. Refimprove date March 2009 Lactation suppression refers to the act of suppressing lactation in new mothers by chemical or other means. After birth some women may desire to stop the production of breast milk, for example when the mother wishes to bottlefeed from birth onwards, or in the case when the Infant mortality infant dies or is Child abandonment surrendered at birth . This can be done in several ways by simply not stimulating the breasts after birth. After a few days the production of milk will cease. Women may experience some discomfort such as engorgement and in few cases pain. These discomforts can be treated with analgesics, cooling packs and chilled cabbage leaves. by binding the breasts by use of tight fitting bras or bandages. This approach should be discouraged as this may cause blocked milk ducts and mastitis. by medication, prescribed by a doctor In the past, hormonal therapies, such as diethylstilbestrol DES and bromocriptine were used, but these are no longer recommended due to side effects e.g. DES is a known carcinogen . In some countries cabergoline dostinex is used for this purpose. Estrogen containing birth control pills may have the same side effect. Levodopa induced dyskinesia is a form of dyskinesia associated with Levodopa used to treat Parkinson s disease . It has been suggested that it involves disruption of the blood brain barrier , though not all evidence supports this. ref name pmid19501164 Cite journal author Astradsson A, Jenkins BG, Choi JK, et al. title The blood brain barrier is intact after levodopa induced dyskinesias in parkinsonian primates evidence from in vivo neuroimaging studies journal Neurobiol. In the context of Parkinson s disease PD , dyskinesia is often the result of chronic L DOPA Levodopa therapy. These motor fluctuations occur in more than half of PD patients after 5 10 years of L DOPA treatment, with the percentage of affected patients increasing over time. ref Obeso JA, et al. The evolution and origin of motor complications in Parkinson s disease. Neurology . 2000 55 suppl 4 S13 S20. ref Dyskinesia most commonly occurs at the time of peak L DOPA blood plasma plasma concentrations and is thus referred to as peak dose dyskinesia PDD . As patients advance, they may evidence diphasic dyskinesia DD , which occur when the drug concentration rises or falls. Attempts to moderate dyskinesia by the use of other treatments such as bromocriptine Parlodel appears to be ineffective. ref van Hilten J, Ramaker C, Stowe R, Ives Nj., 2007. Hypophysitis refers to an inflammation of the pituitary gland . Hypophysitis is a rare and not fully understood. Many individuals are unaware of what Hypophysitis is. Hypophysitis is commonly known as Lymphocytic Hypophysitis because the lymphocytic infiltration was limited to the anterior pituitary. ref http pituitaryadenomas.com lymphoidhypophysitis.htm ref File Gray1180.png right Wikipedia Encyclopedia Signs and symptoms Hypophysits , being a fairly newly discovered disease, there are four categories of symptoms and sign. Most commonly, the initial symptoms are headaches and visual disturbances. Some symptoms are derived from the lesser functioning of the adenohypophyseal hormones. Of the adenohypophyseal hormones, the most frequently affected are Corticotropes, Lactotropes and Gandadotropes All which are found in the anterior pituitary. Polyuria is also a common symptom which results in too much dilute in the urine, as well as polydipsia which means having extreme thirst. Another symptom is hyperprolactinemia , which is when there are abnormally high prolactin levels in the blood. Usually, a mass will be found located on the sella turcica and loss of hormonal function. ref http pathology2.jhu.edu hypophysitis symptoms.cfm ref Diagnosis Mainly, the diagnosis of Hypophysitis is through exclusion patients often undergo surgery because they are suspected of having a pituitary adenoma.
