Image Pellin broca prism.png right frame A Pellin Broca prism A Pellin Broca prism is a type of constant deviation dispersion optics dispersive prism optics prism similar to an Abbe prism . The prism is named for its inventors, the France French instrument maker Ph. Pellin and professor of physiological optics Andr Broca . The prism consists of a four sided block of glass shaped as a right prism geometry prism with 90 , 75 , 135 , and 60 angles on the end faces. Light enters the prism through face AB , undergoes total internal reflection from face BC , and exits through face AD . The refraction of the light as it enters and exits the prism is such that one particular wavelength of the light is deviated by exactly 90 . As the prism is rotated around a point O , one third of the distance along face BC , the selected wavelength which is deviated by 90 is changed without changing the geometry or relative positions of the input and output beams. Citation needed date January 2010 The prism is commonly used to separate a single required wavelength from a light beam containing multiple wavelengths, such as a particular output line from a multi line laser due to its ability to separate beams even after they have undergone a non linear frequency conversion. For this reason, they are also commonly used in optical atomic spectroscopy . References Pellin, Ph. and Broca, Andr 1899 , A Spectroscope of Fixed Deviation . Astrophysical Journal 10 337. Image Wernickeges2.gif thumb 350px The classical Wernicke Geschwind model of language Carl Wernicke created an early neurological model of language, that later was revived by Norman Geschwind . The model is known as the Wernicke Geschwind model . For listening to and understanding spoken words, the sounds of the words are sent through the Auditory system auditory pathways to Brodmann area area 41, which is the primary auditory cortex Transverse temporal gyrus Heschl s gyrus . From there, they continue to Wernicke s area, where the meaning of the words is extracted. In order to speak, the meanings of words are sent from Wernicke s area via the arcuate fasciculus to Broca s area, where morphemes are assembled. The model proposes that Broca s area holds a representation for articulating words. Instructions for speech are sent from Broca s area to the facial area of the motor cortex , and from there instructions are sent to facial motor neurons in the brainstem , which relay movement orders to facial muscles. In order to read, information concerning the written text is sent from visual areas 17, 18, and 19 to the angular gyrus area 39 and from there to Wernicke s area, for silent reading or, together with Broca s area, for reading out loud. This model is now obsolete. Nevertheless it has been very useful in directing research and organizing research results, because it is based on the idea that language consists of two basic functions comprehension, which is a sensory perceptual function, and speaking, which is a motor function. br However, the neural organization of language is more complex than the Wernicke Geschwind model of language suggests. The localization of speech in Broca s area is one of the weakest points of this model. ref Kolb & Whishaw Fundamentals of Human Neuropsychology , 2003 ref References Reflist External links http www.umich.edu psycours 345 lecture11 sld025.htm Neuro stub Category Auditory perception Category Neurolinguistics de Wernicke Geschwind ... more details

Orphan date March 2011 Cortical stimulation mapping CSM is a type of electrocorticography which is used a method to determine the location in the brain where information of a certain kind is processed. Different parts of the brain are used for different functions CSM attempts to find which part of the brain is responsible for certain behaviors in humans and other animals by briefly electrocuting a given part of the brain and determining what effect it has on the patient s behavior. For instance, it s been observed that stimulation in Broca s area can result in aphasia symptoms even in individuals who do not have a speech impairment . ref cite journal last Corina first David P. coauthors Heather Knapp title Sign Language Processing and the Mirror Neuron System journal Department of Psychology, University of Washington, Seattle, WA ref Aphasia is a speech impairment which is caused by brain lesions in Broca s area and other areas of the brain. Postmortem studies are a neurobiological research method in which the brain of a patient, usually the subject of a longitudinal study , with some sort of phenomenological affliction i.e. cannot speak, trouble moving left side of body, Alzheimer s, etc. is examined after death. The irregularities, damage, or other cerebral anomalies observed in the brain are attributed with whatever ailment the patient was afflicted with in life. With repeated studies a more exact correlation can be ascertained. Background Postmortem studies have been used to further the understanding of the brain for centuries. Before the time of the MRI , CAT Scan , or X ray it was one of the few ways to study the relation between behavior and the brain. Image BrocasAreaSmall.png thumb 300px Approximate location of Broca s and Wernicke s areas highlighted in gray Broca Paul Broca used postmortem studies to link a specific area of the brain with speech production. His research started when he noticed that a patient with an aphasic stroke had lesions in the left hemisphere of his brain. His research continued and his theory held up overtime. Most notable of his research subjects was Tan named for the only syllable he could utter . Tan had lesions in his brain caused by syphilis. This lesion was determined to cover the area of the brain important for speech production. The area of the brain that Broca identified is now known as Broca s area and damage to this section of the brain can lead to Broca s aphasia . Wernicke Karl Wernicke also used postmortem studies to link a specific area of the brain with speech production. However his research focused more on patients who could speak, but whose speech made little sense and or has trouble understanding spoken words or sentences. His research in language comprehension and the brain also found it to be localized in the left hemisphere, but in another section. This area is now known as Wernicke s area and damage to this section can lead to Wernicke s aphasia ... more details

Papez received his Doctor of medicine MD from the University of Minnesota Medical School University of Minnesota College of Medicine and Surgery . He is most famous for his 1937 description of the Papez circuit which is a neuron neural pathway in the brain thought to be involved in the Cerebral cortex cortical control of emotion . He was a neurologist at Cornell University when he published a journal article in which he outlined a new circuit to account for emotion. He hypothesized that the hippocampus, the cingulate gyrus Broca s callosal lobe , the hypothalamus, the anterior thalamic nuclei, and the interconnections among these structures constituted a harmonious mechanism which elaborate the functions of emotions. Papez never mentioned Broca s limbic lobe but others noted that his circuit was very similar to Broca s great limbic lobe. See also Papez circuit Paul Broca Paul D. Transcortical Motor Aphasia TMA , also known as adynamic aphasia and extrasylvian motor aphasia, results from an injury to the anterior superior frontal lobe . The injury is typically caused by a cerebrovascular accident CVA , commonly referred to as a stroke . The area of insult is sometimes referred to as a watershed region, a region surrounding Broca s area . The insult typically involves the left hemisphere as most people regardless of handedness are left hemisphere dominant for language nearly 100 of right handers, about 85 of left handers . ref cite web url http www.neurology.org cgi content abstract 34 4 409 title Anatomic basis of transcortical motor aphasia Freedman et al. 34 4 409 Neurology publisher www.neurology.org accessdate 2008 05 11 last first ref Characteristics TMA is a less common impairment than Broca s aphasia . People with TMA generally have good comprehension since Wernicke s area is usually not affected. People with TMA experience non fluent halting and Effortfulness effortful speech due to frontal lobe damage and their utterances are typically only one or two words long. People with TMA retain the ability to repeat words, phrases or sentences. Repetition is preserved since the arcuate fasciculus the neural pathway that connects Wernicke s and Broca s areas via the parietal lobe is intact. Preserved repetition is a defining quality of all transcortical aphasias. People who suffer from transcortical motor aphasia, however, may experience delays in initiation when they try to repeat words due to damage in the frontal lobe. People who suffer from TMA also have severely impaired writing ability. As writing is a secondary modality learned through formal instruction in grade school it is often more severely affected than a primary modality like speaking.
